Adding Thome would mean that Hee Seop Choi is screwed or traded.

This won't happen - what's more dangerous is that the Cubs are looking at David Bell or Bill Mueller to replace Bellhorn at 3B.

The deals offered Thome are between 4 and 5 years in length. He's 32 now. So what kind of production can we expect from him at age 37?

A longtime and very knowledgeable fan on the CLE.SPORTS newsgroup ran a Brock2 projection on Thome. By the age of 37, he's projected to hit 30 homers, with 82 RBI and a BA of .244. I hope this formats correctly.

37 150 463 52 113 16 1 30 82 90 .244
38 150 458 56 123 18 1 31 85 86 .268
39 150 453 40 102 15 1 24 68 82 .224
40 60 150 15 38 5 0 8 24 26 .253
41 72 170 16 40 6 0 8 26 29 .235

His numbers aren't too shabby even at 37 & 38. So I don't understand what Shapiro/Dolan's problem is with paying him $15 million. $15 mill could very well be a bargain for a 30 homer guy in 2008.

NC, I will light candles for you!

I know what it is like. I hope you keep your Thome. He would better any team he goes to, but he belongs to CLE.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1125/1466552.html

CLE has added a 5th yr to the contract, pushing the total value to over $60 mil

PHI has countered, adding a 6th yr to the offer and/or additional $, with speculation of even more being added (7yr-$110 mil ??)

ESPN's reporting the Phillies have upped the offer to 6 yrs/$95M, club option to 7yrs/$110M.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1125/1466552.html

Looks like the Philliies are going to blow out any offer the Indians make.

We'll see just how much team loyalty, a park section re-naming, a statue along side Feller's, a HOF bonus, $1 million a year for life, a guaranteed coaching job upon retirement, playing for one team his whole career, a grass field, the DH rule, and a superb local following means vs.

- turf (at least at the Vet)
- new pitchers
- no DH for that testy back
- impatient Philly fans who don't want their newest multimillionaire hitting .210 in April with 3 HR's.

Stay in Cleveland Jim. Don't pull a Mussina and go for the cash.

I know I'll be kicked out of the Tribe fan club for this, but I've reconsidered the whole thing and believe that Thome's career doesn't have a strong upside.

Big strong guys like Thome have some back trouble, almost without exception, after they hit 33 or 34. Thome's skills are "old-man" skills anyway: he hits homers and draws walks (albeit better than nearly anyone else) -- speed and defense aren't part of the package.

He starts slowly and it takes longer and longer every year to get him going, although he is one of the best hitters in baseball in July and August. When his back gives him trouble, the power will go down and pitchers won't be afraid of him anymore.

Can the Tribe afford to be paying him in years 4, 5 and 6 when he is hurting and only getting luke-warm in Summer? Will 30 homers and a .260 BA be worth what he's getting paid when he's 35?

This isn't "pre-emptive sour grapes" on my part -- IMO Philly would be much worse off with him for the reasons listed in several posts above.

I have faith in Thome. He is staying in CLE.

The rumor mill is in full swing in Cleveland and Philadelphia. The latest is that Thome will stay in Cleveland and an announcemnt will be made tomorrow. We'll see.

It's a very good sign that he's taken all of the Holiday weekend to make his decision. Even the Phillies' huge offer couldn't sway him.

The main Q of this thread was:

Quote:
where SHOULD Thome finish the season and where WILL he finish the season?

Since we now know, the thread will be closed.
