Default Deaden the ball

Yeah, maybe it's the lively ball. I don't know. Maybe it's the hitters -- they're stronger than ever before. Going for the "home run" with every swing.

Whatever it is, it's taken the defense right out of the game -- the subtlety, the skill, in large part. It's like watching Home Run Derby.

Well, you're not gonna make the hitters weaker, so maybe it's time to deaden the ball a little and let the defense come into play again.

Otherwise, men's tennis will become as boring as some baseball games.

Me too. But seriously, men's tennis already is more boring that baseball and has been for several years. With few exceptions, such as Agassi, it's just boom-ace-boom-fault-boom-winner.

You meant as boring as most soccer games, didn't you?

I think the men's game also suffers due to a lack of personality right now, especially compared to the women's game. Venus, Serena and Anna are more recognizable, and are more oversized personalities, than Lleyton, Andy, Carlos or Juan Carlos.

As the young guys develop their rivalries over the next few years, I think a lot of these perceived problems will be solved. There are too many aces in some matches, but that's just the way the game has developed. And the top players still play great matches, full of long rallies and terrifice baseline play.

And if they need more drastic measures, play every match on clay.

Or maybe lack of a dominating american that wins headlines? It's still as big (and boring) everywhere else... but without Sampras or Agassi dominating, maybe the interest here isn't as large as it used to be?

There's a Brasilian-favorable suggestion

Yeah, I think that's a big part of it. I think Roddick is the next great American player, if he can find an all-around game to go with the big serve and big strokes.

As for the clay suggestion, there's no way we could do it. The top 50 would be Guga and 49 guys from Spain!
