I once met a pitcher named Smoltz
When he started games he was a horse
Then his body let down
And closing was his crown
But it's still freaking saves and why should anyone care because it is so bogus and meaningless and ...

The record seems meaningless to me. So much of it has to do with the situation your team creates. As proof, I offer the fact that the record is held by that all-time great, Bobby Thigpen.

I certainly would not argue that Smoltz has not been of great value to the Braves this year. In fact he's had a fine career prior to becoming a reliever

Let's see the impact on John next season and the one after that.

Very few have survived the 50 save season.

I'd love to see Smoltz go back into the rotation. They might need someone to replace Glavine and/or Maddux and this season might have been a 'breather' as he comes back from his 2000 surgery.

If Cox is hung up on the closer role maybe Spooneybarger will do as a replacement, he's pitched really well at every level.
