I got to see it on Baseball Tonight. What was El Duque thinking throwing it twice to A-Rod that they showed and once to Palmeiro?

I don't think he was thinking.
It CAN be effective...once in a blue moon. Dave LaRoche was the last person I remember throwing one. Bill Lee trotted it out too, but it's been quite a while... |

Didn't Tewksbury toss a bunch at McGwire in a Twins-A's game a few months ago?
I thought I remembered McGwire only able to pop them up. |

Few months ago? Did I write that? I couldn't have written something that stupid, could I?
My mistake, Netshrine-world. Tewksbury's venture into eephus-world was in the mid 90's. In related baseball news, Florida just picked up Piazza from the Dodgers!!! Wow! Raise your hand if you saw that coming! |

El Duque's Eephus pitch must make Ted Williams start to thaw.

I was watching on the webcast, and I swear that the ball went above the camera view for a split second. A-rod, the ump, and Posada all appeared to be laughing about it.

A-Rod laughed at the first one. The second one, in his next at-bat, he took out of the park. He said after the game that once he was prepared for it he could stay back on it, and it "looked really big."
Hernandez started mixing in this pitch earlier in the season. It's a lot of fun to watch, but if he overuses it, it will cease to be effective, as A-Rod demonstrated so dramatically. Hernandez's arm motion is (evidently) noticeably slower when he throws this pitch. It's effectiveness would be maximized, I think, if he used it *very* sparingly - not more than once an inning or two, and *never* twice to the same player. When it drops in for a strike the look of surprise on the batter's face is priceless.

Tewksbury once threw a pitch 29 MPH in a game for a strike.
