1) Barry Bonds was given a routine day off yesterday.
After 169 RCAA/1.379 OPS and 161 RCAA/1.381 OPS seasons, Bonds is off to a .692 SLG, .495 OBA, 1.188 OPS, 18 RCAA start in his first 25 games. He has a 1.025 career OPS, compared to his league average of .747, and 1247 RCAA. Bonds, who is the all time NL leader in career OPS, came into the season trailing Rogers Hornsby by 2 points for the best OPS vs. the league average. He's cut that margin down to a single point-- Code:
(MIN: 5000 PA) 2) Pirates LF Brian Giles is hoping to return from the DL during the team's 4 game series against the Astros, which starts today, but it may not happen until the weekend. After 57 RCAA/.994 OPS and 75 RCAA/1.072 OPS seasons, Giles is off to a .323 SLG, .400 OBA, .723 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 9 games. 4) The Orioles placed OF B.J. Surhoff on the 15 day DL, called up P Eric DuBose to start yesterday's game, sent DuBose to the minors afterwards and will call up P Travis Driskill today. Surhoff has a strained right hamstring. After -8 RCAA/.726 OPS and -1 RCAA/.729 OPS seasons, he's off to a .386 SLG, .333 OBA, .719 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 23 games and has a .747 career OPS, compared to his league average of .755, and -17 RCAA in 2052 games. Driskill had a 4.95 ERA/-9 RSAA in 29 games (19 starts) as a 30 year old rookie in 2002. 5) The Indians called up Jason Boyd and sent P Jose Santiago to the minors. 6) The Dodgers placed C Todd Hundley on the 15 day DL, sent utilityman Jason Romano to the minors and called up 1B Larry Barnes and C David Ross. Hundley has a lower back injury. After having 4 negative RCAA's in the past 5 years, he's off to a .360 SLG, .394 OBA, .754 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 12 games. Hundley has a .763 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and 1 RCAA in 1216 games. 7) Redsox RF Trot Nixon was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to an eye irritation. After 28 RCAA/.881 OPS and 13 RCAA/.808 OPS seasons, Nixon's off to a .511 SLG, .423 OBA, .934 OPS, 10 RCAA start in his first 28 games. He has a .840 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and 64 RCAA in 590 games. 8) The Whitesox sent P Josh Stewart to the minors and will activate P Dan Wright from the DL, Stewart had a 5.96 ERA/-3 RSAA in his first 5 major league starts. After starting his career with 5.70 ERA/-8 RSAA and 5.18 ERA/-13 RSAA seasons, Wright's made his 2003 debut yet. 9) Braves P Darren Holmes has had occasional numbness in his arm over the past 3 weeks. He's received anti inflammatory doses over the past 3 days, will see the team doctor today and the team is still undecided whether he's going to go on the DL. Holmes is coming off a 1.81 ERA/14 RSAA career year and has a 6.23 ERA/-2 RSAA in his first 12 games. He hasn't had back to back years with a positive RSAA since 1997-98 and Holmes has a 4.27 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.22, and 33 RSAA in 521 games. 10) According to Mets MGR Art Howe, SS Rey Sanchez had to leave yesterday's game due to a "bad boiler." Howe says, "In Pittsburgh, that's a stomach." The Newark Star Ledger reports there is a language called "Pittsburghease."

1) Rangers 1B-DH Rafael Palmeiro was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a bruised right elbow, which he suffered was hit by a pitch on Saturday. He was able to stay in that game, was used as a pinch hitter yesterday and is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow (the Rangers are off today).
After 50 RCAA/.944 OPS and 41 RCAA/.962 OPS seasons, Palmeiro's off to a .544 SLG, .392 OBA, .936 OPS, 10 RCAA start in his first 29 games. He has a .896 career OPS, compared to his league average of .752, and 554 RCAA in 2442 games. 2) The Diamondbacks placed Ps Byung-Hyun Kim and Stephen Randolph on the 15 day DL and called up Ps Scott Service and Chris Capuano. Randolph has a strained oblique muscle. He has a 5.28 ERA/0 RSAA in his first 13 major league games. Capuano, 24, has made a quick return from Tommy John surgery, which he had last year, after starting the season with a 2.72 ERA in 6 starts in AAA. He's off to a 3.93 ERA start in 6 starts in AAA in 2003, was given a C grade by John Sickels and wasn't ranked in Baseball America's top 30 prospect list for the Diamondbacks. 3) The Rangers signed P Jamey Wright to a minor league contract. He'll report to AAA. 4) Diamondbacks CF Steve Finley reached 100 career triples. After -7 RCAA/.767 OPS and 19 RCAA/.869 OPS seasons, Finley's off to a .407 SLG, .317 OBA, .724 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 32 games. He has a .778 career OPS, compared to his league average of .755, and 96 RCAA in 2012 games. Finley's the only active player with at least 100 triples, while he's also the active leader in 3B above the league average-- Code:
5) The Cubs are expected to activate P Antonio Alfonseca from the DL today. After 3.06 ERA/8 RSAA and 4.00 ERA/0 RSAA seasons, Alfonseca hasn't made his 2002 debut yet. He has a 3.82 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.37, and 17 RSAA in 340 games. 6) Astros 2B Jeff Kent and CF Craig Biggio were given routine days off yesterday, with Kent being used a pinch hitter. After 34 RCAA/.877 OPS and 46 RCAA/.933 OPS seasons, Kent's off to a .527 SLG, .371 OBA, .898 OPS, 5 RCAA start in his first 30 games. He has a .856 career OPS, compared to his league average of .768, and 217 RCAA in 1532 games. After -4 RCAA/.838 OPS and -11 RCAA/.734 OPS seasons, Biggio's off to a .419 SLG, .311 OBA, .730 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 28 games. He has a .810 career OPS, compared to his league average of .753, and 334 RCAA in 2128 games. 7) Marlins RF Juan Encarnacion wasn't in yesterday's lineup, due to a bruised right forearm, and is day to day. After -15 RCAA/.700 OPS and -8 RCAA/.773 OPS seasons, Encarnacion's off to a .450 SLG, .307 OBA, .756 OPS, -3 RCAA in his first 31 games. He has a .758 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and -46 RCAA in 627 games. After passing 2500 career PA earlier in the season, Encarnacion's close to the leader list for worst OBA vs. the league average, for the past half century, among OF with at least 2500 PA. 8) Padres P Adam Eaton had to leave yesterday's game, due to a mildly strained right groin, a day after Brian Lawrence had to be removed from his start when he felt "something uncomfortable" in his elbow. Lawrence says this has happened before, it's no big deal, and he'll be able to make his next start, while Eaton is day to day. Eaton's 2001-02 seasons were ruined by Tommy John surgery and he's off to a 3.73 ERA/-1 RSAA start in his first 7 starts in 2003. After starting his career with 3.45 ERA/7 RSAA and 3.69 ERA/2 RSAA seasons, Lawrence's off to a 3.53 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 7 starts. 9) The Marlins activated OF Abraham Nunez from the DL and sent him to the minors.
