1) Marlins P A.J. Burnett will be placed on the DL tomorrow, for the 2nd time this season, due to a sore elbow. He'll meet Dr. James Andrews and could be facing season ending surgery.

After 4.05 ERA/3 RSAA and 3.30 ERA/16 RSAA seasons in his first couple of full years in the majors, Burnett has a 4.70 ERA/-2 RSAA in 4 starts. He has a 3.86 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.32, and 18 RSAA in 82 games.

2) The A's placed RF Jermaine Dye on the 15 day DL and called up Jason Grabowski.

Dye thought he'd only miss a game or two, but those plans were scratched when he turned out have torn cartilage in his knee. He'll have surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be out for 3-5 weeks.

Grabowski's mostly an OF, but can also play both infield corners and was originally signed as a catcher. He was given a C+ grade by John Sickels and was ranked as the A's #12 prospect by Baseball America. Grabowski came into the season with a .870 career OPS (.391 OBA, .479 SLG), including a .923 OPS (.387 OBA, .536 SLG) in AAA in 2002, and is off to a .991 OPS (.558 SLG, .433 OBA) in 21 games in AAA in 2003. He also had a 1.295 OPS/3 RCAA in 4 games (11 PA) as a September callup in 2002.

3) The Indians placed CF Milton Bradley on the 15 day DL and called up OF Jody Gerut.

Bradley has a strained right hamstring.

4) The Angels placed CF Darin Erstad on the 15 day DL, retroactive to April 20, and called up OF Gary Johnson.

Erstad has tendinitis in his right knee. After -20 RCAA/.691 OPS and -5 RCAA/.702 OPS seasons, Erstad's off to a .439 SLG, .416 OBA, .855 OPS, 2 RCAA start in his first 18 games. He has a .780 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and 37 RCAA in 953 games.

Johnson, 27, wasn't ranked in the BA's top 30 prospect list for the Angels or included in Sickels book. He came into the year with a .821 OPS (.448 SLG, .373 OBA) in 4 minor league seasons, including a .817 OPS (.476 SLG, .341 OBA) in 40 games in AAA in an injury ruined 2002 season. He was off to a .738 OPS (.423 SLG, .315 OBA) start in 20 games in AAA in 2003 and made his major league debut yesterday.

5) The Marlins designated minor league P Wes Anderson for assignment, to make room on the 40 man roster when they called up Ps Allen Levrault and Toby Borland.

6) Braves C Javier Lopez returned to the starting lineup, after being out of it for the past 5 games because of a strained hamstring.

After 3 consecutive years with a negative RCAA, Lopez is off to a .450 SLG, .274 OBA, .724 OPS, -1 RCAA start in his first 17 games. He has a .808 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772, and -7 RCAA in 1044 games.

7) The Diamondbacks will activate P Randy Johnson from the DL before the 2nd game of their doubleheader against the Mets. Brandon Webb, who's starting the opener. could be tone who is sent down.

8) Cubs MGR Dusty Baker says Mark Bellhorn is still the starting 3B, but there's speculation that could change soon, with either prospect David Kelton being called up or a trade.

Bellhorn had 25 RCAA/.886 OPS in 2002, which his first season with more than 68 and first with more than 38 since 1997. He's off to a .290 SLG, .348 OBA, .638 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 23 games and has a .761 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766, and 6 RCAA in 295 games.

9) Pirates CF Kenny Lofton had to leave yesterday's game, due to tightness in his left quadriceps.

After -10 RCAA/.721 OPS and 9 RCAA/.763 OPS seasons, Lofton's off to a .284 SLG, .255 OBA, .539 OPS, -5 RCAA start in his first 22 games. He has a .795 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and 188 RCAA in 1527 games.

10) Marlins C Ivan Rodriguez has been taking ground balls in the infield and says "I've been thinking about it [changing positions] and, if I can do it, I think I can play six to eight more years." But, he has no plans to give up catching at the moment and, while he only has a 1 year contract with the Marlins, he'd like to finish his career with the team.

After 18 RCAA/.888 OPS and 10 RCAA/.895 OPS seasons, Rodriguez is off to a .469 SLG, .402 OBA, .871 OPS, 6 RCAA start in his first 23 games. He has a .832 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and 72 RCAA in 1502 games.

1) The Giants sent P Jerome Williams to the minors and called up P Jeff Urban.

Williams made his major league debut by starting yesterday. Urban will be in the bullpen until Jason Schmidt comes off the bereavement list.

So, the first National League team to use the bereavement list also becomes the team to "abuse" it. The purpose of the rule is for a team to not to have to be shorthanded due to a death in a player's family. For one day, when it was Schmidt's turn in the rotation, the Giants used the list for that purpose. For the rest of the days, they've used it for the purpose of adding another arm to the pen.

Nothing illegal about it. But, we knew it wouldn't take long for a team to exploit the list.

2) The goofyness continues over Albert Pujols. Even though he's supposed to be not able to throw, he's in the starting lineup in LF the past couple of games. According to MGR Tony LaRussa, "If it doesn't work, if something goes wrong, I'll quit."

I know a lot of people who would like to see that happen. But, at the price of a serious injury to Pujols, the pricetag has to be too high.

3) Twins 2B Luis Rivas was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to tightness in his right hamstring.

After -20 RCAA/.682 OPS and -12 RCAA/.697 OPS seasons in his first couple of years as a starter, Rivas is off to a .297 SLG, .227 OBA, .524 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 19 games. He has a .680 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and -42 RCAA in 281 games.

4) The Rangers designated minor leaguer Jermaine Clark for assignment, to make room on the 40 man roster for Doug Davis.

5) BlueJays C Greg Myers left yesterday's game, due to a bruised right forearm, and is day to day.

Myers had a negative RCAA every season since his career started in 1987, except when he didn't appear in the majors in 1988. He's off to a .442 SLG, .380 OBA, .822 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 20 games and has a .692 career OPS, compared to his league average of .759, and -98 RCAA in 993 games.

6) The Cubs signed OF Trenidad Hubbard to a minor league contract.

Hubbard has a .714 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -23 RCAA in 466 games, including .556 OPS/-9 RCAA in 89 games with the 2002 Padres.

7) The Tigers released minor league P Dave Borkowski.

Borkowski had a 6.93 ERA/-26 RSAA in 34 games with the 1999-2001 Tigers.

8) The Redsox released minor league P Kris Foster.

Foster had a 2.70 ERA/2 RSAA in 7 games with the 2001 Orioles.

9) P Luis De Los Santos became a free agent when he refused the Devil Rays outright assignment to the minors. He was already in the minors and had been designated for assignment.

10) Giants C Benito Santiago (sore elbow after being hit by a pitch), RF Jose Cruz Jr. (right hamstring) and 2B Ray Durham (fouled a ball of his foot) all had to leave yesterday's game.

Santiago says he might have to miss some time, but doesn't expect to go on the DL. After -22 RCAA/.664 OPS and -4 RCAA/.765 OPS seasons, he's off to a .485 SLG, .373 OBA, .859 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 18 games. He has a .721 career OPS, compared to his league average of .746, and -146 RCAA in 1833 games.

After 14 RCAA/.857 OPS and 0 RCAA/.754 OPS seasons, Cruz is off to a .616 SLG, .439 OBA, 1.056 OPS, 12 RCAA start in his first 23 games. He has a .806 career OPS, compared to his league average of .774, and 29 RCAA in 770 games.

After .804 OPS/5 RCAA and .825 OPS/15 RCAA seasons, Durham's off to a .492 SLG, .430 OBA, .923 OPS, 6 RCAA start in his first 17 games. He has a .784 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 47 RCAA in 1217 games.
