1) According to Baseball Prospectus's Will Carroll, Ken Griffey Jr's injury is less serious than Phil Nevin's, but is still closer to Nevin's than to Derek Jeter's, and it's about 50-50 that Griffey is going to eventually have surgery.

There is a lot more Griffey discussion in his BP premium column.

Meanwhile, the Reds officially placed Griffey on the 15 day DL and called up OF Jose Guillen.

Guillen's .367 SLG, .287 OBA, .653 OPS, -20 RCAA in 85 games with the Diamondbacks and Reds in 2002 was the 4th time in his 6 year career that he had a double digit negative RCAA, and if he had more playing time in 2000-01, he could easily be looking at a 6 year streak. Guillen has a .702 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -86 RCAA in 614 games.

Even though the Reds are adding an OF to the roster, they aren't currently believed to be backing down on the plans to see if Barry Larkin can handle CF and the team also says they don't plan on signing Greg Vaughn.

2) Dr. James Andrews confirmed the Yankees doctors opinion that Derek Jeter will not surgery. The Yankees say his recovery will take at least 6 weeks, while P Mariano Rivera could be activated in about 10 days.

3) The Redsox exercised their $17.5 million option on Pedro Martinez for the 2004 season.

After 2.39 ERA/28 RSAA and 2.26 ERA/47 RSAA seasons, Martinez is off to a fast start in his first couple of stats, with a 0.60 ERA/7 RSAA. The premier pitcher in the league has a 2.61 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.45, and 407 RSAA in 328 games.

4) The Mets agreed to a couple of contracts with Shane Reynolds over the weekend. But, since it's against MLB rules for a minor league contract to contain an option year, the commissioner's voided them.

5) The Braves got 3 consecutive HRs, from Gary Sheffield, Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones, in the 6th inning against the Marlins.

It the 2nd consecutive year that Andruw Jones was part of a back to back to back HR trio, doing it last June 11, with Vinny Castilla and Matt Franco.

6) Padres 3B Sean Burroughs had to leave yesterday's game, due to a "dull, burning sensation" in his shoulder. It was the same shoulder that he had surgically repaired and MGR Bruce Bochy says Burroughs will probably sit out for a few games.

Burroughs had a disappointing .323 SLG, .317 OBA, .640 OPS, -6 RCAA in 63 games as a 21 year old rookie in 2002 and is off to a slow start, with a .539 OPS/-2 RCAA in the small sample size of 8 games this year.

7) The Yankees released C Chris Widger. They had already removed him from the roster when he was designated for assignment at the end of spring training.

8) The Dodgers are suing the Hartford insurance company claiming they didn't make a $4 million payment on the team's policy on Kevin Brown.

9) Indians P C.C. Sabathia had tests on hyperextended left elbow and the team says the results show he's not going to have to go on the DL.

10) Giants 1B J.T. Snow had to leave yesterday's game, due to cramps in his right calf, and is day to day.

Snow has a .779 OPS/19 RCAA in 1357 career games.
