1) Reds CF Ken Griffey Jr. dislocated his right shoulder while diving for a ball.

He's out indefinitely.

2) Astros 1B Jeff Bagwell played in his 1800th career game.

He's among the all time leaders in NL history for best OPS vs. the league average, for 1800+ games--

Code:
OPS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Rogers Hornsby .279 1.012 .734 2 Barry Bonds .276 1.023 .747 3 Stan Musial .236 .976 .739 4 Hank Aaron .215 .944 .729 5 Willie Mays .210 .941 .731 6 Mel Ott .207 .947 .740 7 Jeff Bagwell .205 .965 .760 8 Mike Schmidt .187 .908 .720 9 Roger Connor .181 .875 .695 10 Honus Wagner .177 .857 .680

3) The Royals became the first team to start a season 5-0 after losing at least 100 the previous year. The 1899 Cardinals, 1906 Braves and 1952 Browns all started 4-0.

4) Mets C Mike Piazza served the final game of his 4 game suspension yesterday.

Piazza is the all time leader in RCAA by a catcher--

Code:
RCAA 1 Mike Piazza 425 2 Bill Dickey 339 3 Yogi Berra 312 4 Mickey Cochrane 303 5 Gabby Hartnett 254 6 Johnny Bench 247 7 Ted Simmons 217 8 Carlton Fisk 216 9 Buck Ewing 206 10 Fred Carroll 203

5) The Mets sent C Jason Phillips to the minors and will call up 1B-OF Tony Clark today.

6) Greg Maddux had a terrible outing in which he allowed 9 runs (7 earned) in 2 innings against the Marlins. The 3 HR he allowed in the 2nd (to Ivan Rodriguez, Mike Lowell and Alex Gonzalez) was the 1st time he's done that.

Maddux is the all time leader in best HR allowed vs. the league average--

Code:
HOMERUNS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Greg Maddux 166 214 380 2 Roger Clemens 160 297 457 3 Kevin Brown 130 178 308 4 Tommy John 129 302 431 5 Nolan Ryan 123 321 444 6 Tom Glavine 97 247 344 7 Eppa Rixey 92 92 184 8 Mark Gubicza 82 155 237 9 Pedro Martinez 81 142 223 10 Dean Chance 80 122 202

He also shares the major league record for the most seasons being 15+ HR better than average--

Code:
T1 Greg Maddux 3 T1 Kevin Brown 3 T1 Roger Clemens 3 T4 Dean Chance 2 T4 Mike Hampton 2 T4 Danny Jackson 2 T4 Bob Veale 2

7) Mets 1B Mo Vaughn had to leave yesterday's game, due to a minor strain to his right hip flexor, and expects to be in the lineup today.

8) The Tigers became the first team to start 0-5 in back to back years since the 1992-93 Royals.

While those Royals finished the 2nd year above .500, don't expect that from the Tigers.

9) Phillies P Kevin Millwood had to leave yesterday's game, due to a strained right groin. He expects to be able to make his next start, which would be Thursday.

Millwood's coming off a 3.24 ERA/22 RSAA season with the Phillies and has a 3.72 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.39, and 67 RSAA in 170 games.

10) Angels P Jarrod Washburn left yesterday's game, after being hit in the arm by a line drive. But, it was also the 7th inning, he had reached 108 pitches and would have been removed shortly afterwards without that. He is expected to make his next start.

Washburn's one of just 3 lefties in the AL to have 20+ RSAA in each of the past 2 years, with Mark Mulder and Mark Buehrle being the others.

11) Juan Encarnacion, Alex Gonzalez and Mike Lowell became the first trio of Marlins to homer in consecutive games.

12) Indians P C.C. Sabathia had to leave yesterday's game, due to a hyperextended elbow, and he'll return to Cleveland to be examined. But, he currently says he doesn't expect to miss a start.

1) Phillies 1B Jim Thome's streak of reaching base safely reached 60 games. It's the longest since Mark McGwire had a 62 game streak in 1995-96.

After 66 RCAA/1.040 OPS and 88 RCAA/1.122 OPS seasons, Thome's off to an excellent small sample size 7 RCAA/1.333 OPS start in 5 games.

2) According to mlb.com, Ruben Sierra reached 2000 career games on Wednesday.

But, unless he played 101 games that day, he only reached 1900.

3) The Brewers 0-5 record is their first such start since 1985.

It will be a big surprise if they reach the 71 wins that the '85 team had.

4) Cardinals LF Albert Pujols wasn't in yesterday's lineup, due to a strained left hamstring, and might not start today. He was used a pinch hitter yesterday.

Pujols is following up his excellent first 2 seasons with a hot 1.206 OPS/2 RCAA in his small sample size first 5 games.

5) Pirates SS Jack Wilson was out of yesterday's lineup, due to a bruised left ankle.

After posting a .283 OBA in his first 2 years in the majors, Wilson is off to an excellent start in outmaking, with 13 outs in his first 16 plate appearances.

6) The Rangers are considering making Todd Van Poppel a starter again. He's currently on the DL.

7) The Phillies sent INF Chase Utley to the minors and called up P Eric Junge.

The Phillies need an extra arm in the bullpen after starters Joe Roa and Kevin Millwood combined for just 5 IP in the past 2 games.

8) The Mets activated P Tyler Yates from the DL and sent him to the minors.

9) Royals RF Dee Brown has missed the past couple of games, after being hit in the elbow with a pitch on Thursday.

10) Devil Rays MGR Lou Piniella's considering trying Aubrey Huff in RF, but doesn't have a timetable for when that could happen.

After a .660 OPS/-24 RCAA in 2001, Huff hit .520 SLG, .364 OBA, .884 OPS, 20 RCAA in 113 games in 2002.

Default Ted Simmons - Underrated and Underappreciated

The list below shows how underrated Ted Simmons is. All the catchers above him are in the Hall of Fame and only Fred Carroll, who played in the 1880s, among the top ten is not in the HOF.

I recognize that Simmons was a better player offensively than defensively so this stat may overrate his overall contributions a tad, but it shows what good company he is in. Amazingly, Simmons received less than 5% of the vote for the HOF in his first year of eligibility in 1994 and has been eliminated from consideration thereafter.

Piazza is the all time leader in RCAA by a catcher--

RCAA
1 Mike Piazza 425
2 Bill Dickey 339
3 Yogi Berra 312
4 Mickey Cochrane 303
5 Gabby Hartnett 254
6 Johnny Bench 247
7 Ted Simmons 217
8 Carlton Fisk 216
9 Buck Ewing 206
10 Fred Carroll 203
