Bonds is now exactly 100 HR behind Babe Ruth.

7) Jeff Bagwell passed Albert Belle and tied Frank Howard and Jim Rice for 43rd place on the all time HR list, with 382.

Bagwell became the 2nd player in Astros history to hit 2 HR on Opening Day, joining Roman Mejias, in 1962 (when the team was known as the Colt .45s). He also moved into the top 10 for HR vs. the league average by a 1B--

Code:
HOMERUNS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE 1 Mark McGwire 404 580 176 2 Jimmie Foxx 395 521 126 3 Lou Gehrig 377 493 116 4 Willie McCovey 280 439 159 5 Johnny Mize 252 359 107 6 Fred McGriff 238 458 220 7 Norm Cash 208 377 169 8 Rafael Palmeiro 207 418 211 9 Hank Greenberg 199 275 76 10 Jeff Bagwell 196 382 186 11 Eddie Murray 195 414 219

(The list only covers seasons in which the players primary position was 1B, which accounts for the discrepancy between players' numbers and their usual ones.)

Lee forgot to post this report, and I wanted to comment, inconsequential though my comment is.

9) It took new Mariners MGR Bob Melvin 3 attempts to make out his lineup card. The first time, he wasn't sure whether he should put "Ichiro" or "Suzuki" into the leadoff spot. The second time, he screwed up his signature.

I don't really think the first time was a legitimate issue. It's clear to me that the last name should be used. After all, I'm sure that Buck Showalter is going to write Rodriguez, instead of A-Rod, that Frank Robinson is going to write O. Hernandez, instead of El Duque, that Grady Little will write Martinez, not Pedro, ...

But, even if there's really an issue on Suzuki, shouldn't a grown man be able to get his own signature right the first time?
To be charitable, perhaps he was confused about the whole Japanese names thing. As I understand it, in Japan, you say the last name first, as in, "Now hitting, Oh Sadaharu." In the Occident, though, they reverse the order so as to avoid confusion. So, maybe Grady was experiencing uncertainty as to which moniker was Ichiro's surname. If I'm wrong, somebody may wish to chime in with carification (or confirmation.)

Also, and I'm not sure if this explains the flub of his own name, in Japan, the hand can be used like a knife. But this doesn't work with a tomato!

1) The Yankees placed SS Derek Jeter on the 15 day DL and called up SS Erick Almonte.

Jeter will have a MRI tomorrow.

Almonte, 25, was ranked as the Yankees #24 prospect by Baseball America and wasn't good enough to make it into John Sickels's prospect book. Almonte had a .694 OPS (.282 OBA, .412 SLG) in 66 games in AAA in 2002 and a .748 OPS (.406 SLG, .342 OBA) in 53 games after a demotion to AA, while he has a .703 OPS (.394 SLG, .319 OBA) in 7 minor league seasons. He also appeared in 8 games, which just 4 PA, in the majors in 2001.

2) Devil Rays SS Rey Ordonez homered yesterday. His 1 HR for the season already allows this year to tie 5 other seasons for his 2nd highest figure, behind his unheard of 3 HR season in 2001.

At the moment, Ordonez's .700 SLG is .319 above the current AL league average. By comparison, he's only had a .319 SLG twice and has a .305 career mark.

3) Mets C Mike Piazza's suspension, from a bench clearing incident on March 12, was reduced from 5 games to 4. He'll start serving it today.

4) The Indians signed C Victor Valencia to a minor league contract.

5) Tigers top prospect Jeremy Bonderman will make his major league debut tonight.

The 20 year old is the youngest pitcher to start a game for the Tigers since Bruce Robbins did it as a 19 year old, in 1979.

6) The Diamondbacks placed P Bret Prinz on the 15 day DL and called up C Robby Hammock.

Prinz has a torn groin muscle and is expected to miss at least a couple of months. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are expected to look for another reliever, with GM Joe Garagiola Jr. says he's spoken to Mike Jackson's agent. The team had released Jackson at the end of spring training.

Hammock, 25, was ranked as the team's 24th best prospect by Baseball America and was given a C grade by John Sickels. He had a .805 OPS (.447 SLG, .358 OBA) in AA in 2002, his first full year at that level and is viewed as a future utilityman who, in addition to catching, can also play both the corner INF and corner OF.

7) Redsox pitching coach Tony Cloninger watched Opening Day from his hotel and returned to Boston yesterday to prepare for the start of his cancer treatments. While GM Theo Epstein says the team still expects him to serve as pitching coach, they are making contingency plans in case he needs a long leave of absence.

8) Indians GM Mark Shapiro says if the Yankees are interested in Omar Vizquel, he "ha[s] no intention of trading him." Meanwhile, Vizquel has no trade rights, by virtue of being a 10 and 5 year man and has said he doesn't want to go anywhere, except he'll consider returning to the Mariners.

10) Alex Rodriguez set the Rangers record by playing in his 326th consecutive game, breaking the mark held by Ruben Sierra, from 1988-90. Including his time with the Mariners, Rodriguez has a 387 game streak.

11) Rangers GM John Hart says the team has some interest in Shane Reynolds, while the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports 11 could be interested in him, with the Cardinals and Braves possibly being in the lead.

12) Dodgers P Wilson Alvarez was originally leaning against accepting a demotion to AAA, but he did accept it.

13) Padres P Jeff Kent, oops, I mean Jay Witasick, is now denying that he hurt himself taking out the garbage. According to Witasick, he had pitched a couple of innings the day before and he thinks he himself then.

Of course, he doesn't have an alibi yet on why it took a couple of weeks for him to come up with this version of the story.
