Corrections from yesterday--The Cardinals traded minor league OF Covelli Crisp to the Indians as the player to be named later in the Chuck Finley trade. They did not trade him to themselves.

Darrell Porter's car got caught on a tree stump that was hidden due to tall grass, not tall crash.

1) Braves P Greg Maddux had to leave yesterday's game, after 5 innings, due to a strained muscle in his right side.

The all time great is leading the NL with a 2.42 ERA and his 29 RSAA rank 3rd in the league, behind Randy Johnson (37) and Curt Schilling (32). Maddux recently broke the modern day NL record for career RSAA--

Code:
1 Greg Maddux 531 2 Grover C Alexander 523 3 Christy Mathewson 409 4 Tom Seaver 362 5 Carl Hubbell 355 6 Bob Gibson 350 7 Phil Niekro 337 8 Warren Spahn 319 9 Steve Carlton 311 10 Tom Glavine 280

Kid Nichols holds the all time NL mark, with 579, while Maddux recently passed Cy Young (531 in NL, with a record 815 for his whole career) for 2nd on the all time NL list.

2) The Twins placed P Eric Milton on the 15 day DL and called up P Juan Rincon.

Milton will have knee surgery today, due to a lateral meniscal tear, and is expected to miss 4-5 weeks.

Rincon, 23, is off to a 5.12 ERA/-1 RSAA start in his first 4 games (3 starts), after appearing in 4 games in the majors last year.

Johan Santana is replacing Milton in the rotation. After starting his career with 6.49 ERA/-11 RSAA and 4.74 ERA/-1 RSAA seasons, the 23 year old is off to a 3.36 ERA/9 RSAA start in his first 14 games (10 starts).

3) Cubs P Jon Lieber will have Tommy John surgery.

After 4.41 ERA/-6 RSAA and 3.80 ERA/10 RSAA the past 2 years, his 2002 season ends with a 3.70 ERA/6 RSAA. He has a 4.18 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.35, and 25 RSAA in 272 games.

4) A rarely handed out extreme accuracy award goes to ESPN.com, in its "Power Rankings" column, for writing, "If we hear one more time how Craig Counsell is the team MVP, we're going to lose our lunch all over our keyboards. Makes the most of his abilities? Yes. MVP? Not even close"

Counsell is having another bad season to add to his collection. His .352 SLG, .349 OBA, .701 OPS, -13 RCAA start in his first 111 games makes this the 3rd time in the past 4 years that he's posted a double digit negative RCAA. Counsell has a .713 career OPS, compared to his league average of .773, and -37 RCAA in 568 games.

If Counsell actually was the team MVP, that would leave them with a lineup with a single player just barely posting a .700 OPS, who is on pace to cost his team almost 20 runs from the league average (he's on pace for -18 RCAA) and then everyone on the team would be worse than that. If that really was the case, the Diamondbacks would consider getting up to Devil Rays/Tigers level bad offense to be progress they need to strive towards.

5) Yankees DH-1B Nick Johnson had to leave yesterday's game, due to a sprained left wrist. X-rays were negative and he's going to have a precautionary MRI today.

Johnson, a 23 year old rookie with a very good minor league track record, is off to a .421 SLG, .344 OBA, .765 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 105 games and also had 23 games of major league experience last season.

6) The Rangers placed P Chan Ho Park on the 15 day DL and called up P Juan Alvarez.

Park has a blister on his middle finger.

7) The Diamondbacks sent P John Patterson to the minors when they activated P Rick Helling from the DL.

Patterson's off to a 4.32 ERA/0 RSAA start in his first 3 major league starts.

8) The Orioles activated Jeff Conine from the DL and sent Howie Clark to the minors.

After 4 consecutive years with a negative RCAA, Conine had a 24 RCAA/.829 OPS season in 2001. He's doing a good job showing that was a fluke, with a .438 SLG, .289 OBA, .728 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 65 games. He has a .803 career OPS, compared to his league average of .767, and 70 RCAA in 1310 games, with all of his production being limited to 1993-96 and 2001.

Clark's off to a .396 SLG, .362 OBA, .758 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 14 games.

9) The Indians signed Ps Dave Burba and Travis Miller to minor league contracts.

They will reportedly give Burba a couple of minor league starts. He wasn't really performing at a should be released level with the Rangers, with a 5.42 ERA/-3 RSAA in 23 games (18 starts) and had a positive RSAA before the disastrous final outing that triggered his release.

10) The Astros say Richard Hidalgo and Orlando Merced will be platooning in RF for the rest of the season.

After his big 47 RCAA/1.028 OPS season in 2000, Hidalgo fell to 0 RCAA/.811 OPS and continued that decline with a .426 SLG, .327 OBA, .753 OPS, -6 RCAA start in his first 100 games. He has a .850 career OPS, compared to his league average of .782, and 42 RCAA in 600 games.

After -1 RCAA/.817 OPS and -1 RCAA/.786 OPS seasons in 1999 & 2001 (he didn't play in the majors in 2000), Merced's off to a .473 SLG, .370 OBA, .843 OPS start in his first 83 games. He has a .790 career OPS, compared to his league average of .753, and 59 RCAA in 1228 games.

11) A's P Jim Mecir had to leave yesterday's game, due to a cramp in his calf, and is day to day.

After 2.96 ERA/17 RSAA and 3.43 ERA/6 RSAA the past 2 years, Mecir's off to a 4.64 ERA/2 RSAA start in his first 46 games. He has a 3.74 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.71, and 42 RSAA in 301 games.

12) The Yankees are expected to activate P Mariano Rivera from the DL today.

After 19 RSAA/2.85 ERA and 19 RSAA/2.34 ERA the past 2 years, Rivera's off to a 5 RSAA/3.06 ERA start in his first 35 games. He has a 2.61 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.75, and 129 RSAA in 438 games.

13) Padres 3B Phil Nevin was given a routine day off yesterday.

After 30 RCAA/.916 OPS and 51 RCAA/.976 OPS the past 2 years, Nevin's fallen to a still productive, but far from that level, .449 SLG, .345 OBA, .793 OPS, 8 RCAA start in his first 63 games. He has a .842 career OPS, compared to his league average of .782, and 75 RCAA in 736 games.

15) Braves P Mike Remlinger had to leave yesterday's game, due to a groin injury, and is expected to be placed on the DL today.

Remlinger has quietly been a very productive pitcher for the Braves since 1999. After 2.38 ERA/18 RSAA, 3.47 ERA/9 RSAA and 2.76 ERA/14 RSAA in his first 3 years with the team, he's off to a 1.48 ERA/17 RSAA start in his first 58 games. Remlinger has a 3.79 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.29, and 39 RSAA in 424 games.
