Default Why "Joe Mama" is funny?

I read the news about Jojima being teased by Moyer, but I don't know why it's funny... Is it some kind of slang?

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseba...aseplug17.html

Quote:
Johjima began the day catching starter Gil Meche. Following Meche was starter Jamie Moyer, who was more than ready to have a little fun.

"What's your name?" Moyer asked as he settled in on the mound.

"Johjima," came the reply.

"Joe? Joe mama?" Moyer countered.

"Johjima," Johjima said again.

"Joe mama?" Moyer asked again.

It went on that way for a bit. Johjima seemed to get that he was being teased, and full realization came when Moyer's next question was, "Where are you from?"
And:

Quote:
"Who are you?'' he said to Kenji Johjima.

"Joe ... JOE!'' the Japanese catcher said Thursday morning, sounding surprised the 43-year-old with whom Johjima had been playing catch for the last month in Seattle and in Arizona didn't know who he was.

"Joe? Joe Who?'' Moyer asked. "Joe Mama?''

The first catcher from Japan to play in the major leagues doesn't have command of English enough to recognize teasing.

Thanks a lot!

Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking. Just have fun.
- Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, in The Sandlot

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

That Seattle news piece ranks among the lamest articles I've read in a while. I know there's not always a lot to write about, but that's the best they could come up with?

Maybe you had to be there.

Thanks a lot.

I think it will be interesting to be a M's fan this year, since we have a catcher who can't speak English, a starter likes deer hunting, a OF used steroids for horses, and a DH who don't believe dinosaurs...
