1) The Tigers tied a team record with 27 hits in a game and the Royals set the team record for hits allowed.

2) Tigers 1B Carlos Pena tied the AL record with 6 hits in a 9 inning game.

After 0 RCAA/.764 OPS in his first year as a starter, Pena hit .440 SLG, .332 OBA, .772 OPS, 3 RCAA in 131 games in 2003 and is off to a .459 SLG, .315 OBA, .775 OPS, 0 RCAA start in his first 44 games. He has a .775 career OPS, compared to his league average of .762, and 5 RCAA in 312 games.

3) The Royals placed RF Juan Gonzalez on the 15 day DL, retroactive to May 22, and called up OF Byron Gettis.

Gonzalez has stiffness in his lower back.

4) The Diamondbacks sent P Brian Bruney to the minors and called up P Scott Service.

Bruney had a 3.72 ERA/1 RSAA in his first 10 career games.

Service has a 4.86 ERA/-14 RSAA in 318 career games, including a 4.72 ERA/0 RSAA in 33 games with the 2003 Diamondbacks and BlueJays, which was his first time in the majors since 2000.

5) The Cubs will place OF Tom Goodwin and P Todd Wellemeyer on the 15 day DL and call up OF David Kelton and P Jimmy Anderson.

Goodwin has a strained right groin. After -12 RCAA/.622 and -2 RCAA/.659 OPS seasons, Goodwin hit .363 SLG, .328 OBA, .690 OPS, -3 RCAA in 87 games in 2003 and is off to a .286 SLG, .227 OBA, .513 OPS, -3 RCAA start in his first 23 games. He has a .673 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779, and -139 RCAA in 1234 games.

Wellemeyer has a strained shoulder muscle and is expected to be out 3-4 weeks. He has a 5.09 ERA/-4 RSAA in 24 career games, including a 2.08 ERA/3 RSAA in 9 games in 2004.

In 2003, Kelton had -2 RCAA/.417 OPS in his first 10 career games (12 PA).

After 5.10 ERA/-17 RSAA and 5.44 ERA/-17 RSAA seasons, Anderson had a 8.84 ERA/-20 RSAA in 7 starts (8 games) with the 2003 Reds. He has a 5.43 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.38, and -63 RSAA in 110 games.

6) The Padres placed P Jake Peavy on the 15 day DL, retroactive to May 20, and called up P Brian Sweeney.

Peavy has a strained tendon in his forearm. He has a 3.90 ERA/-2 RSAA in 58 career games, including a 2.01 ERA/11 RSAA in 9 starts in 2004.

In 2003, Sweeney had a 1.93 ERA/3 RSAA in his first 5 career games, with the Mariners.

7) The Orioles sent P Denny Bautista to the minors and called up P Eddy Rodriguez. Meanwhile, C Keith Osik cleared waivers and became a free agent, when he refused an assignment to the minors. Osik had been removed from the 25 and 40 man rosters when he was designated for assignment earlier in the week.

Bautista had a 36.00 ERA/-7 RSAA in his first 2 career games.

8) The Indians designated minor league P Jason Anderson for assignment.

9) The Devil Rays will call up 1B Fred McGriff today.

After 34 RCAA/.930 OPS and 18 RCAA/.858 OPS seasons, McGriff hit .428 SLG, .322 OBA, .750 OPS, -1 RCAA in 86 games with the 2003 Dodgers. He has a .889 career OPS, compared to his league average of .752, and 486 RCAA in 2433 games.
