1) The Cubs set the major league record for most pitching SO.

The new top 10--

Code:
STRIKEOUTS YEAR SO 1 Cubs 2003 1352 2 Cubs 2001 1344 3 Cubs 2002 1333 4 Diamondbacks 2002 1303 5 Diamondbacks 2001 1297 6 Yankees 2001 1266 7 Redsox 2001 1259 8 Braves 1996 1245 9 Diamondbacks 2003 1241 T10 Braves 1998 1232 T10 Dodgers 1997 1232

They are also on top against the league averages--

Code:
STRIKEOUTS YEAR DIFF TEAM LEAGUE 1 Cubs 2003 316 1352 1036 2 Mets 1990 292 1217 925 3 Dodgers 1961 276 1105 829 4 Mets 1971 273 1157 884 5 A's 1904 270 887 617 6 Yankees 1932 267 780 513 7 Dodgers 1960 264 1122 858 8 Astros 1969 261 1221 960 9 A's 1905 251 895 644 10 Cubs 2002 249 1333 1084

2) The Dodgers had back to back to back HR in the 4th, against the Giants, with Robin Ventura, Jeromy Burnitz and Adrian Beltre hitting them.

3) Brewers SS Royce Clayton, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, says the Diamondbacks are at the top of his list.

Clayton could lead the league in worst RCAA for the 2nd time in the past 4 years. He currently leads Endy Chavez, -38 to -37.

4) Diamondbacks P Curt Schilling pitched in his 450th career game.

Schilling set the major league record for best SO/BB rate, vs. the league average, for pitchers with 450+ games--

Code:
STRIKEOUTS/WALKS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE G 1 Curt Schilling 2.29 4.22 1.93 450 2 Doug Jones 1.91 3.68 1.77 846 3 Trevor Hoffman 1.76 3.70 1.94 638 4 Tom Henke 1.70 3.38 1.68 642 5 Dennis Eckersley 1.68 3.25 1.57 1071 6 Billy Wagner 1.68 3.62 1.95 461 7 Christy Mathewson 1.68 2.96 1.29 635 8 Rod Beck 1.56 3.48 1.92 674 9 Ferguson Jenkins 1.53 3.20 1.67 664 10 Dick Hall 1.53 3.14 1.61 495

5) Rockies P Jason Jennings's virus will sideline him for the rest of the season.

6) A's P Rich Harden missed yesterday's start, due to minor back spasms.

Harden, a highly rated rookie, has a 4.64 ERA/-3 RSAA in his first 12 career starts.

7) Yankees 1B Jason Giambi and SS Derek Jeter were given routine days off.

After 103 RCAA/1.137 OPS and 75 RCAA/1.034 OPS seasons, Giambi is hitting .520 SLG, .441 OBA, .931 OPS, 48 RCAA in 150 games. He has a .964 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and 442 RCAA in 1258 games.

After 32 RCAA/.858 OPS and 23 RCAA/.794 OPS seasons, Jeter is hitting .455 SLG, .395 OBA, .850 OPS, 24 RCAA in 113 games. He has a .852 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775, and 237 RCAA in 1206 games.

8) Yankees P Roger Clemens is concerned about a tight right hamstring.

After 3.51 ERA/24 RSAA and 4.35 ERA/0 RSAA seasons, Clemens has a 3.94 ERA/10 RSAA in 32 starts. The all time great has a 3.19 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.39, and 613 RSAA in 606 games.

9) There is a lot of speculation that Orioles MGR Mike Hargrove is starting his last week on the job, while Eddie Murray has emerged as a potential replacement.

10) With the Whitesox on the brink of elimination, this could easily be MGR Jerry Manuel's final week.

11) According to SABR's David Vincent, Randy Johnson's HR on Friday, at the age of 40 years, 9 days, made him the oldest player to hit his 1st career HR. The old record was 38 years, 363 days, by Bill McGhee.

12) Braves 3B Vinny Castilla has a bruised middle finger on his right hand and is day to day.

After -17 RCAA/.775 OPS and -38 RCAA/.616 OPS seasons, Castilla has a .461 SLG, .311 OBA, .772 OPS, -8 RCAA in 145 games. He has a .808 career OPS, compared to his league average of .770, and -149 RCAA in 1475 games.

is this the top three-year run by a pitching staff, relative to their league?

no, i know the graph you showed is single-season. i'm wondering, however, whether this is the greatest 3-yr stretch ever.
