1) According to the Mets doctor, Mike Piazza is expected to miss 8-12 weeks, while there is concern that he could be out for the season. Meanwhile, Will Carroll will have usual high quality commentary on the injury, as well as some of the reporting on it, as part of Baseball Prospectus's premium content.
2) Redsox P Pedro Martinez was scratched from yesterday's start, due to a mild strain of the latissimus muscle on his right side. The Boston Globe reports he's expected to miss his next start, while Will says it depends on the results of a MRI. Just like yesterday's start was supposed to be against the Yankees, his next start (Monday) also would be against them. After 2.39 ERA/28 RSAA and 2.26 ERA/47 RSAA seasons, Martinez is off to a 2.83 ERA/10 RSAA start in his first 9 starts. He has a 2.63 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.46, and 410 RSAA in 335 games. 3) Astros 3B Geoff Blum was scratched from yesterday's lineup, due to a fever and severe headaches. He was then taken to the hospital, for tests for a viral syndrome and remained in the hospital overnight for observation. After-28 RCAA/.664 OPS and 7 RCAA/.807 OPS seasons, Blum's off to a .424 SLG, .327 OBA, .751 OPS, -2 RCAA start in his first 42 games. He has a .753 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780, and -27 RCAA in 489 games. 4) Orioles 2B Jerry Hairston Jr. broke a bone in his right foot, when he fouled a pitch off it. He's expected to miss 4-8 weeks. After -20 RCAA/.649 OPS and -4 RCAA/.705 OPS seasons in his first years with more than 50 games, Hairston's off to a .382 SLG, .387 OBA, .769 OPS, 3 RCAA start in his first 42 games. He has a .695 career OPS, compared to his league average of .768, and -32 RCAA in 428 games. 5) The Yankees designated P Al Reyes for assignment, when they called up P Jose Contreras. Reyes has a 4.10 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.53, and 12 RSAA in 212 games, including a 3.38 ERA/0 RSAA in 5 games in 2003. 6) The Redsox called up P Rudy Seanez and sent P Jason Shiell to the minors. After 2.75 ERA/6 RSAA and 5.73 ERA/-3 RSAA seasons, Seanez hasn't made his 2003 debut yet. He has a 4.49 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.33, and -9 RSAA in 275 games. Shiell has a 4.11 ERA/0 RSAA in 9 games in 2003 and a 5.94 ERA/-3 RSAA in 12 career games. 7) Royals P Runelvys Hernandez was scratched from his start yesterday, due to a sore elbow. After having a 4.36 ERA/8 RSAA in 12 starts as a 24 year old rookie in 2002, Hernandez is off to a 2.79 ERA/12 RSAA in his first 9 starts in 2003. 8) Dave Hollins, who was in AAA with the Phillies, left the team and is considering retiring. Hollins has a .779 career OPS, compared to his league average of .756, and 36 RCAA in 983 games. 9) When Pirates P Dennys Reyes got a second opinion, from Dr. Tim Kremchek, that one said Reyes was injured and should be been placed on the DL. Meanwhile, yesterday's "deadline" to determine his status has turned in a today "deadline." 10) Braves 2B Marcus Giles had to leave yesterday's game, due to a bruised left calf, and is day to day. After -5 RCAA/.769 OPS and -6 RCAA/.714 OPS seasons, with exactly 68 games in each season, Giles is off to a .572 SLG, .416 OBA, .988 OPS, 18 RCAA start in his first 42 games. 11) Padres CF Mark Kotsay has a back problem and could be headed to the DL as early as today. After 11 RCAA/.807 OPS and 19 RCAA/.810 OPS seasons, Kotsay's off to a .301 SLG, .340 OBA, .641 OPS, -4 RCAA start in his first 37 games. He has a .756 career OPS, compared to his league average of .778, and -8 RCAA in 777 games.
