I dunno - how much interaction does the GM have with the 3B coach? He may have a sense that Gardenhire gets along with the players, but he's got to evaluate whether (1) Gardenhire has leadership qualities, and (2) Gardenhire can get along with him (Ryan). When I was a manager, I knew the head of my department pretty well, but not his boss. I can see how things would work that way.
