Angry Another Reason Why You Can't Trust Owners With Numbers

How do you like you books cooked?

From the current BBA:

Quote:
Plenty of Good Seats Available

Jeffrey Loria used to own the Expos. Now he owns the Marlins. When he moved he brought most of his front office with him. So it’s natural a keen rivalry would develop between the two organizations.

Some believe it extended to cooking the attendance books to avoid finishing last. Here’s what happened:

The Expos started their final home game of the season three hours before the Marlins, which meant the Expos’ official attendance was announced while the Marlins’ game was still in progress. When Florida announced its attendance at Pro Player Stadium, it claimed 28,599, though there were probably about 10,000 people in the park.

According to club president David Samson, Loria’s stepson, an anonymous benefactor (who is not an employee of the team) purchased more than 15,000 tickets at a discounted rate of one dollar each because he didn’t want to see the Fish end up at the bottom of the attendance standings.

Coincidentally, that made the Marlins’ final average 10,038, just nipping Montreal’s 10,031.

"It’s not about Montreal. This was never about Montreal," Samson insisted. "This was about the Florida Marlins, (and that they) should not be last in attendance in the major leagues."

Samson further claimed the Marlins distributed more than 160,000 free tickets this year to various charities and youth groups, but unlike the Expos, refuse to count any of those in their paid totals.

But here’s the number that should really matter: The final announced Marlins attendance represented a 36 percent decline from the previous year.

If Jeff Loria gave me 15,000 and told me to buy 15,000 tickets for one game, he would never hear from me again.

The more I see and hear of Jeff Loria, the more he reminds me of a guy drowning, and not knowing what to do to get back afloat.

In other words, I don't know of another owner who always seemed more over his head.

Since MLB owns Montreal Expos, does this mean we'd get to contract Selig?

VNV - I care. Funny business like this isn't right - though it has happened quite a bit in the past and in other leagues as well.

I care too.

You know that studies have proven that children who are cruel to animals grow up to be adults who are cruel to people.............

.......sorta the same thing here.

Owners who are willing to fudge attendence numbers probably grow up to be owners who are wiling fudge numbers on profit and loss statements..............

and the profit margins of the Florida Marlins affects you how....

When George Steinbrenner was trying to strongarm the city into building him a new stadium, it was well known that he fudged attendance figures downward, until the Yankees started winning and selling out every night, making the whole farce ridiculous.

If there's any one owner whose profits adversely affect the rest of baseball, it's George. Should we care about that, too?

If it's baseball, I care. Period. It's my favorite organized pastime.
