Default Pirates Names

Specifically, how did the Pittsburgh Pirates get their moniker "Pirates"?

I thought they got it after they signed Louis Bierbauer from the Athletics. They plundered the A's, hence the new name.

They lured Lou Bierbauer from the Brooklyn team in the Player Lg,
before that Lou played for the Phila. team in the Amer. Ass..
With both teams he was a .300 hitter. When Pittsburgh got him
they became known as the Pirates and Lou became a .206 hitter.
Somewhat like joining the Mets today.

There was a tacit agreement that the PL players were to go back to their NL and AA teams. However, through some skullduggery - which I believe involved hiding players in hotel rooms, the Pittsburgh team became knows as "Pirates". Bierbaur was one, but there was another as well. I'll look it up tonight.

of course, they had no where to go but up. They had the worst NL team in 1890 as the "Innocents".

Yes Smed, these were called Piratical moves at the time.
I think the other guy was none other than the HOF'er
Connie Mack who became manager of these Pirates in 1894.
