Valuev improves to 27-0 after first-round KO

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Nicolai Valuev, the 7-foot-2, 320-pound Russian heavyweight, made his first U.S. fight since 1997 an impressive one, knocking out George Linberger in the first round Saturday night at the Trump Taj Mahal.

The 27-year-old Valuev improved to 27-0 with 23 knockouts by knocking down Linberger twice with combinations. Linberger, of Akron, Ohio, was counted at 2:00 of the opening round.

Valuev, who was defending the Pan-Asian Boxing Association title, is the tallest heavyweight in boxing history.

Linberger's record fell to 19-7.

Promoters Joe O'Donnell and Louis Fugazy said Friday the fight would be the first of six bouts in the United States for Valuev.

Valuev has fought in Germany, England, Australia, Japan and the Czech Republic, in addition to his homeland.

On May 31, 1997, he stopped Terrell Nelson in the second round at the Taj Mahal on the undercard of Vince Phillips' 10th-round victory over Russian Kostya Tszyu for the IBF junior welterweight title.

I read a piece about this guy before the fight. Someone in his camp said that this guy 'punches like a mule.' A reporter followed up with 'yeah, but does he move like one?'

It went unanswered.

Aaawww, talking boxing without me?

I just heard on the news that the Melee in China is postponed because poor wittle baby Ruiz is HURT. Sheeeet, I bet he's already nursing a broken ego at the mere THOUGHT of stepping into a ring with Holyfield. What a waste.

I can't wait to see Klitchko fight...he's awesome.

See, I was right about Klitschko...he's awesome! Shufford didn't stand a chance. I wish I would've gotten tickets to that one. I guess the next big fight is Tua and Byrd, and I hate both of them so I won't be disappointed about not shelling out $50 for a nosebleed seat. I hope they beat each other silly.

Net, just how tall is that Fugazy guy next to him? I've seen a few college or amateur basketball players that big but this guy's heavy also.

I wonder how he'd do against Tyson or other heavyweights who are much shorter. No matter what I keep thinking of the canceled fight between 6'3" Muhammad Ali and 7'2" Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain. I would agree that Russian guy would be awesome in the WWF which has had quite a few larger than life behemoths since Hulk Hogan and before this, Gorilla Monsoon, Superstar Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino.

Nicest trash talking 80 yr old woman i had ever met. Did not recognise her son, or her brother. Later when I made the connection ( after getting autographed promo cards and offer of free tickets) all I could think was"what was Thanksgiving like with this way wacked family.)

Evidently, there was a wrestler, who had the same exact name as my "real" name who was also known as the "Brooklyn Brawler." I never knew this until the late '80's - - when the questioning first started.

I think some do a search on AOL, see my name on a profile, and think I'm him.

Andre was to me the biggest of all the big men. Only Haystacks Calhoun was heavier at 601 lbs. He was given this weight since they didn't know his weight and 600 lbs seemed to "round" a figure {pun intended

He wasn't as mobile towards the end of his career much like Chief Jay Stromboe. I'm still amazed when in March of 89 Hulk Hogan did the unthinkable and slammed Andre. Lots of choreographed moves and I could tell Andre helped himself a little into Hulk's hands but think turning a man that giant sized over and slamming him. Not for me.

Andre was not only supertall, he was very stocky with wide hips. The only wrestler close was that Spanish wrestler El Gigante who was about 7 ft+ and 450 lbs. As long as I'm on this side of the ring I'm happy.

Net, strange as it seems, the WWF tries to say that the Brooklyn Brawler is a Yankee fan. The picture looks like a different wrestler than the one I'd seen in the early 90s. That guy went by another name and was more of an unsophisticated brawler than showy gymnastics like Macho Man Randy Savage was into. All the guys from Mr. Perfect, Brutus the Barber Beefcake had the slick moves unless they were gigantic like The Undertaker or Psycho Sid. The last two guys are about 6 ft 9 in and 300 lbs, not chopped liver in my book but even they had better moves and holds than this guy did.
