NetShrine Rookie Of The Year

Your shiny new manager Bruce Kimm, just led your rookie phenom Mark Prior throw 136 pitches in his start.
As pointed out by UTK recently, pitchcounts aren't everything to determining somebodies injuryrisk, but I can't believe that having your 21 year old stud throwing 136 pitches is healthy anyway. For his sakes and the Cubs future, I hope Kimm loses the manager tag soon. :-)

How do you let a pitcher who is a huge part of that team's future throw 130+ pitches in a really meaningless game.

Ooh, this really burns me up. What is Kimm doing, taking chances with a potential franchise pitcher? Does the Kerry Wood experience mean nothing to these people?

But Prior wanted to finish. And everyone knows that ballplayers are always correct.

He may have thrown 136 pitches but it was a night game!

So Kimm has been criticized for taking a pitcher out too soon and now for leaving a pitcher in too long. At least we've been consistent and just criticized him no matter what he does.

No inconsistency, except on Kimm's part. He was not criticized for taking Leiber out too soon, after he had thrown 136 pitches.

I was sick when I saw the box this morning.
But, in a weird way, its not exactly Kimm's fault. He must feel that he has to win to keep his job. His pen has blown a couple leads in the last week. If Prior is cruising, Kimm might feel like he has to leave Prior out there--future be damned. Maybe if the Cubs got rid of this interim crap and immediately hired the person with the best understanding that this is a team for 2003/4/5/... |

If Mark Prior were a dog, the ASPCA would be called in for animal cruelty. I guess young pitchers in floundering organizations don't receive such protections. Once upon a time, the Tigers has a young pitcher, Les Cain, who had promise, but mismanagement resulted in him ruining his arm. Cain sued the Tigers and collected. If Cain could collect, what could a stud like Prior receive in lost wages and earnings if Kimm ruins him, especially now, when pitch counts are more closely tracked, and there is greater awareness and documentation of what overwork can do to young pitching arms? |

After the diabolical Bruce Kimm cruelly allowed Prior to throw 136 pitches (knowing there was an extra day off before his next start), hooked the rookie after just six easy innings in each of his next two games.
Look, Prior ain't Pedro Martinez. He's 6-5, 225 pounds. He has 100 innings in 16 starts. An occasional stretching out isn't going to hurt him. |
