6) The Phillies traded 3B Scott Rolen and minor league P Doug Nickle to the Cardinals for Ps Bud Smith and Mike Timlin and 3B Placido Polanco.

After 28 RCAA/.920 OPS and 32 RCAA/.876 OPS the past 2 years, Rolen's off to a .472 SLG, .358 OBA, .830 OPS, 14 RCAA start in his first 100 games. He has a .877 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776, and 152 RCAA in 844 games.

Rolen gives the Cardinals a big improvement over Placido, while Polanco is an asset if the Phillies's goal is to retain the cellar. After -6 RCAA/.765 OPS and -14 RCAA/.725 OPS the past 2 years, he's off to a .389 SLG, .316 OBA, .705 OPS, -8 RCAA start in his first 94 games. Polanco has a .716 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780, and -46 RCAA and his OBA is the lowest since his .292 rookie year in 1998.

Smith, a highly touted youngster, had a 3.83 ERA/5 RSAA in 16 games (14 starts) as a 21 year old rookie in 2001 and is off to a 6.94 ERA/-16 RSAA start in his first 11 games (10 starts).

After 4.18 ERA/3 RSAA and 4.09 ERA/2 RSAA the past 2 years, Timlin's off to a 2.51 ERA/9 RSAA start in his first 42 games. He has a 3.55 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.50, and 79 RSAA in 634 games.

Nickle's a 27 year old with 10 games of major league experience over the past 3 years.
