Unhappy On Man, That's Not Wright!

I wonder how many missed this today - -
Poor Ron Wright had what had to be the WORST EVER big league debut.

I've been tracking Wright since he hit 32 HR in 1995 in A-Ball. It's been all uphill. Injuries - real bad. He bounced from the Braves' to the Pirates' to the Reds' to the D-Days' to the M's systems.

Still, just 26, he gets called up for the first time ever on Friday to replace the injured Edgar Martinez.

In his first game today, this is what happens:

First AB ever - three pitches: Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night - he K-ed - LOOKING.

Second AB - He hits into a wild Triple Play - - I think the scoring was 1-6-2-5-1-4.

Third AB - He wacks at the first pitch he sees and he grounds into a Double Play.

He "outed" for the cycle! One Out - DP - TP!

Sweet Lou pinch hit for him in what would have been his 4th AB. Had to be out of mercy.

Next time you think you're having a bad day - think about poor Ron Wright.

Just went back to look at the gamecast - - poor guy saw 9 pitches and made 6 outs:

1st AB - 3 pitches, backwards K
2nd AB - 5 pitches, GITP on a 2-2 offering
3rd AB - 1 pitch, GIDP

Nine pitches - - 2 balls, 3 strikes looking, 2 strikes swinging, 2 pitches put into play - - six outs.

On the good side, it can only go up from there, right?

Maybe he can face that KC rookie his next apperance.

Did anyone see that TP? Was it a liner, or what happened. Normally, pitchers don't start Triple Plays...

I saw it real quick on ESPN - first (Olerud) and third (Sierra).

Hard grounder to Rogers. He throws to A-Rod to force Olerud.

A-Rod throws to Hasselman and they get Sierra in a rundown, which I think went 6-2-5-1.

Rogers then threw to 2nd to get Wright trying to advance to 2nd.

Remember this for a trivia question stumper of the future: who, in his major league debut, hit into a single play, a double play, and a triple play?

does a K count as hitting into a single play?

Whoops, I guess there wasn't much "hitting" involved. Okay, so we'll modify the trivia question: It will be, who whiffed, hit into a double play, and hit into a triple play in his major league debut? Remember this one, folks, I bet it will win a few bar bets.

First thing I thought when he did that was that I'm glad he was playing DH, because Leo "Bananas" Foster did everything Wright did and also made an error in his first chance at SS for the Braves in 1972.
Also, I thought that they might have Juan Thomas on speed-dial, but never mind that now.

You could look at it another way - which player hit into 6 outs in his first 3 ABs?

2 outs/AB - that has got to be a record.

Well, so much for that. The Mariners DFA'd him.
