Thumbs down Ben Sheets Should Have Won 2004 NL Cy Young

Today, Roger Clemens "won" the 2004 Cy Yound Award for the National League.

And, Ben Sheets was robbed of the award.

This season, Sheets was better than Clemens in CG, IP, BB allowed, Ks, ERA, RSAA, Baserunners allowed per 9 IP, Ks per 9 IP, BB allowed per 9 IP, Strikeouts to Walks Allowed ratio, and Neutral Wins.

That's Sheets better than Clemens in 11 key pitching indicators.

Now, many would say, what about Randy Johnson? Well, the Big Unit and Sheets were close in CG, IP, Ks, ERA, RSAA, Baserunners allowed per 9 IP, Ks per 9 IP, and Neutral Wins (with Johnson getting the slight nod in most of these). But, Sheets showed much better control and command this season than Johnson's numbers would support. See:

Code:
2004 NL WALKS/9 IP 1 David Wells .92 2 Ben Sheets 1.22 3 Greg Maddux 1.40 4 Randy Johnson 1.61 2004 NL STRIKEOUTS/WALKS 1 Ben Sheets 8.25 2 Randy Johnson 6.59 3 David Wells 5.05 4 Greg Maddux 4.58

Therefore, here, the award would go to Sheets - not Johnson, or Clemens.

Now, the fact that Sheets did not even place in the "top 4" in the final voting tells you that the voters this year ignored the stats and went with something else.

What a shame.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

The Big Unit had 50 RSAA to Sheets 45. That is an edge in overall performance to the Unit, but not so big that a case can't be made for Sheets. Pitching for the Brewers is a tough way to win a CYA.

FWIW, it was the best season by a RH Brewers pitcher ever - by far.

WIth my aforementioned forgetfulness with regards to the Brewers' existence, it should go without saying that I overlooked Sheets this year, too.

Milwaukee? they have a baseball team? I know they have a stadium, but I hear they use it for bowling tournaments.

Steve- going back to your gold glove posting, and how maybe the best person doesn't always get the award...maybe Clemens got this award out of respect as well. Food for thought.

Well it was a better choice than the Steve Bedrosian Cy Young, but as disputable as the Fernando Valenzuela Cy Young. Although I thought Randy was better, Sheets winning it would have been ok too.

In this case, at least, I think it's become a pitching-MVP award. Port these guys into an MVP debate, and, acc to the prevailing conventional wisdom, Clemens would be widely considered the 'most-valuable" of the three (based largely on 'Win' total and playing for a relevant team). I ain't sayin' it's right...
