Red face Red Sox Hardly Ever Swing And Miss

Saw this in a side-bar box on the ESPN.com recap of Game 2 of the 2004 World Series:

Quote:
Of the 354 pitches thrown by Cardinals pitchers in the first two games of the series, Red Sox hitters have swung and missed only 18 times, with 60 foul balls.

Talk about being 'dead on' at the plate! This is an incredible achievement by the Red Sox batters.

Granted, the first reaction I had when I saw this was "Were there a lot of balls thrown as opposed to strikes?" Looking back at the boxscores from the 1st two games, it does appear that the Cardinals pitchers could have had better control in these games. But, they did throw 206 (by my rough count) strikes.

So, assuming that the Sox batters only swung at strikes - and, yes, I know this is not the case, but, let's assume - then they swung and made contact on 91% of their swings.

Adam Dunn couldn't do that if you put the ball on a tee for him.

It's almost as if the Red Sox knew what was coming. Kudos for them for being this savvy and efficient at the plate. The next three games in St. Louis will be interesting - to see if they keep up this contact rate. Worth watching in what already has become a one-sided World Series.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

FWIW, Gammons is now reporting that:

Quote:
Boston had an incredible seven swings-and-misses in Game 1 followed by seven swings-and-misses in Game 2.

14? 18? It's still an incredible stat.

I wonder how many times a team swings and misses in an average game? 7 does seem very low, but you don't see that many in games anymore.

Lots of strikeouts on check swings, lots of strikes on fouls, lots of called strikes.

I would bet that the Phillies last year swung and missed a lot. It probably varies from team to team.

Particularly since they led the league in strikeouts, including strikeouts at home. Also worth noting that they only whiffed a combined seven times in the final two games of the ALCS in Yankee Stadium, for a combined total of just fifteen strikeouts in their last four games. They've been locked in for a while.

I wonder how much of this was just Bellhorn taking third strikes?

Actually, it's interesting. Yes, they lead the league in Ks at home - but, it was by a narrow margin. Seattle was right tere too.

Do all these strikeouts have anyting to do with park factors?
