Default NDF 2003-04 Winter Fun - 1908 Award Winners - NL

For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for Best Positional Player (Include defense and position played in your determination), Best Pitcher, Best First Year Player and any other topics of discussion from this season.

Fred Merkle, anyone?

Best Batter: Honus Wagner
No contest. Wagner finished first in OBP and SLG% and had 53 stolen bases too. This was probably his best season ever.

Best Pitcher: Christy Mathewson
37 wins and a league leading 1.43 ERA. Mathewson almost led the Giants to a pennant by himself.

No room for debates here either.

Top player: Honus Wagner with one of the all-time great years. Led in average, on-base, slugging, OPS, hits, doubles, triples, RBI, steals, and had a 205 OPS+ compared to second-place Mike Donlin's 155.

Top pitcher: Christy Mathewson was magnificent, winning the pitcher's triple crown leading in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Mordecai Brown was a distinguished second.

Top rookie: Buck Herzog batted .300 in 64 games for New York. Chief Wilson, the single-season triples record holder, batted .227 in 529 ABs for Pittsburgh, so he doesn't seem qualified.

This was an ever greater race than the AL race, one of the most famous in history, with the Cubs, Giants, and Pittsburgh going down to the final day. This was the year of "Merkle's Boner."
