There were the special elections of Lou Gehrig (retired 1939, inducted 1939) and Roberto Clemente (died 1972, inducted 1973)
There must not have been the 5 year rule in the early years. Babe Ruth - retired 1935, inducted in the first class of 1936 Mel Ott - retired 1947, inducted 1951 |
