For the season referenced in the subject line of this thread, who would be your pick for NL Best Batter, NL Best Pitcher, Best First Year in the NL Player, NL Manager of the Year, and NL Best Comeback Player?
Why?

More fun with Win Shares:
Pitchers; Jim Whitney (Boston) 42, Pud Galvin (Buffalo) 36, Jim McCormick (Cleveland) and George Derby (Detroit) 34, Larry Corcoran (Chicago) 30. Position players; Cap Anson (Chicago) 22, Tom York (Providence) 17, Paul Hines, Joe Start (both Providence) and King Kelly (Chicago) 16, several with 15. I'd pick George Derby as the best pitcher in the league this year. Derby was something of a one-year wonder, slumping in 1882, terrible in 1883, then out of the league. But he was terrific for Detroit in 1881. Led the league in strikeouts and shutouts, third in wins for a .500 team. Among players, this was truly Anson's year. He led the league in batting average, on-base, OPS, RBI, hits, total bases, and OPS+. A dominating performance for Cap at age 29. Rookie of the year was Derby, although he had virtually no career afterwards. I have avoided selecting manager and comeback players so far, because that's harder to do. |

Best Batter: Cap Anson
Great batter less than great person. Best Pitcher: Jonah Derby Tough race but Derby had 29 wins and an ERA of 2.20 in a hitter's park. Best Rookie (I am going by baseball-reference's debut listing): Jonah Derby Best Manager: Jim O'Rourke Lead the Buffalo Bisons to a huge improvement Best Comeback: Jack Rowe Bounced back from a below average year to post a OPS+ of 153 |

Derby and Anson were the NPOTY for 1881. I'll go with them, where applicable. Others to follow.

Best Hitter: Cap Anson
Started becoming baseball's first superstar that year. Best Pitcher: Larry Corcoran Had worse season than his 1880 campaign, but was still the best pitcher. Best Rookie: George Derby Beats out Charlie Radbourn because of league leading 9 shutouts. Best Manager: Jim O'Rourke Improved lowly Buffalo team by 21 games. Best Comeback: Charlie Bennett Didn't just have first great year at the plate, had stellar year behind it. |
