Default Andruw Jones--age 23

Net had asked how many players had better years, at age of 23, than Andruw Jones did in 2000.

This afternoon, I built the part of the encyclopedia that enables me to answer the question and the answer is plenty of them--both in terms of players throughout history and players who played this year.

Here's how Jones's season ranks in some key stats--

7 Reggie Jackson 1969 81
8 Frank Thomas 1991 77
9 Willie Mays 1954 75

Players who played this year who had 31+ RCAA at Jones's age--Frank Thomas (77, 1991), Ken Griffey Jr. (70, 1993), Jose Canseco (67, 1988), Mark McGwire (62, 1987), Juan Gonzalez (56, 1993), Cal Ripken (49, 1984), Gary Sheffield (47, 1992), Ruben Sierra (46, 1989), Tim Raines (46, 1983), Manny Ramirez (43, 1995), Barry Bonds (39, 1988), Scott Rolen (38, 1998), Vladimir Guerrero (35, 1999).

There is.

As soon as I get done with a couple of other responses for this forum, I'll get right to work on those charts.

I wouldn't make it through my first day working for a team--

Boss--Give me the player's stats.

ME--Here they are.

Boss--Where the player's average? Where's his RBI?

ME--Why don't I just compute the average distance of each player's spit. That's as useful as average.

Boss--Players have been judged by average for over a hundred years.

Me--People like you have been stupid for over a hundred years.

Boss--You're fired.

Me--Good. Working in a place with the lack of understanding of baseball statistics can only damage my reputation.

I can't find the thread where we debated how much $$$ he'd get in the FA market, but the Bravos did just sign him to a 6 year extention. No mention of the cash involved. It will be interesting to see.

The question of the day is whether we've seen the best of Andruw's potential, or whether he really is going to turn into the next Willie Mays. If he hits like he did this year, this deal is a waste. If he significantly improves, it's a bargain.

He took the bird in the hand - he didn't have the balls to go for the two in the bush. No pun intended on his sexcapes detailed in the stripper trials.
