Net had asked how many players had better years, at age of 23, than Andruw Jones did in 2000.
This afternoon, I built the part of the encyclopedia that enables me to answer the question and the answer is plenty of them--both in terms of players throughout history and players who played this year. Here's how Jones's season ranks in some key stats-- 1) Jones had 31 RCAA. Here's the top 10 for age 23-- 1 Ted Williams 1942 122 2 Arky Vaughan 1935 98 3 Ty Cobb 1910 97 4 Mickey Mantle 1955 85 5 Stan Musial 1944 84 6 Joe Jackson 1913 83 7 Reggie Jackson 1969 81 8 Frank Thomas 1991 77 9 Willie Mays 1954 75 10 Mel Ott 1932 74 Players who played this year who had 31+ RCAA at Jones's age--Frank Thomas (77, 1991), Ken Griffey Jr. (70, 1993), Jose Canseco (67, 1988), Mark McGwire (62, 1987), Juan Gonzalez (56, 1993), Cal Ripken (49, 1984), Gary Sheffield (47, 1992), Ruben Sierra (46, 1989), Tim Raines (46, 1983), Manny Ramirez (43, 1995), Barry Bonds (39, 1988), Scott Rolen (38, 1998), Vladimir Guerrero (35, 1999). Jones's 31 RCAA are only tied for 74th on the all time list. 2) Jones had a .907 OPS Here's the top 10 for age 23-- 1 Ted Williams 1942 1.147 2 Arky Vaughan 1935 1.098 3 Willie Mays 1954 1.078 4 Mickey Mantle 1955 1.042 5 Hal Trosky 1936 1.026 6 Ken Griffey Jr. 1993 1.025 7 Mel Ott 1932 1.025 8 Reggie Jackson 1969 1.018 9 Eddie Mathews 1955 1.014 10 Al Simmons 1925 1.012 Players who played this year who had a .907+ OPS at Jones's age--Ken Griffey Jr. (1.025, 1993), Troy Glaus (1.008, 2000), Frank Thomas (1.006, 1991), Juan Gonzalez (1.000, 1993), Mark McGwire (.987, 1987), Vladimir Guerrero (.978, 1999), Gary Sheffield (.965, 1992), Manny Ramirez (.960, 1995), Jose Canseco (.959, 1988), Alex Rodriguez (.943, 1999), Scott Rolen (.923, 1998) Jones's .907 OPS ranks 48th among 23 year olds. 3) Jones had a .541 SLG Here's the top 10 for age 23-- 1 Willie Mays 1954 .667 2 Ted Williams 1942 .648 3 Hal Trosky 1936 .644 4 Juan Gonzalez 1993 .632 5 Mark McGwire 1987 .618 6 Ken Griffey Jr. 1993 .617 7 Mickey Mantle 1955 .611 8 Orlando Cepeda 1961 .609 9 Reggie Jackson 1969 .608 10 Arky Vaughan 1935 .607 Players who played this year with a .541+ SLG at Jones's age--Juan Gonzalez (.632, 1993), Mark McGwire (.618, 1987), Ken Griffey Jr. (.617, 1993), Troy Glaus (.604, 2000), Vladimir Guerrero (.600, 1999), Alex Rodriguez (.586, 1999), Gary Sheffield (.580, 1992), Jose Canseco (.569, 1988), Manny Ramirez (.558, 1995), Frank Thomas (.553, 1991), Ruben Sierra (.543, 1989). There is.
As soon as I get done with a couple of other responses for this forum, I'll get right to work on those charts.

I wouldn't make it through my first day working for a team--
Boss--Give me the player's stats. ME--Here they are. Boss--Where the player's average? Where's his RBI? ME--Why don't I just compute the average distance of each player's spit. That's as useful as average. Boss--Players have been judged by average for over a hundred years. Me--People like you have been stupid for over a hundred years. Boss--You're fired. Me--Good. Working in a place with the lack of understanding of baseball statistics can only damage my reputation.

I can't find the thread where we debated how much $$$ he'd get in the FA market, but the Bravos did just sign him to a 6 year extention. No mention of the cash involved. It will be interesting to see.

The question of the day is whether we've seen the best of Andruw's potential, or whether he really is going to turn into the next Willie Mays. If he hits like he did this year, this deal is a waste. If he significantly improves, it's a bargain.
