I'd go with Rickey or Mack (unofficial, but puh-lease) if I had to vote ... since no one thought my hilarious GM=Greg Maddux post was response-worthy.

I'd say Hanlon, Selee, and Mack revolutionized player scouting and acquisitions. Rickey revolutionized other things.

Branch Rickey was way ahead of his time.

Integrating the major leagues was a great thing!

Destroying the free minor leagues, relegating them to vassal status is not so great!

I want to give a mention to Cedric Tallis, who was GM for the Royals during their most innovative period, and during the period that they laid the groundwork for their successful 1976-80 period.
He seems to have been forgotten.

Branch Rickey all the way. He was the Washington/Jefferson/Lincloln/Elvis/Sgt. Pepper's of baseball GMs. The game is the way it is today in large part because of Rickey (and probably the rest because of Marvin Miller and Curt Flood).

Ditto-ing Boomer, signing Jack Roosevelt Robinson alone puts him heads and shoulders above all the rest. Of course, even without this he would still be heads and shoulders above the rest. A true giant.

It may be a fair arguement to say that post-1975 GMs have a trickier day-in/day-out job, but no one has yet to come along to match Rickey's vision.
