Default Ted Terrific

This one's easy to look up, but before you do, take a guess as to what you think the answer is:

In all the years that Ted Williams played enough to qualify for the batting championship, how many different players ever finished ahead of him in average.

Five? I guess it could be a little more, though, just because he didn't finish too high his rookie season.

I'd guess a dozen or so. I'll bet for OBA or SLG there are even fewer.

Wow! You guys are even more impressed with Ted than I was. The number is 12, which I thought was amazing. In all the years he played a "full" season, these are the only players who ever finished above him (and you're right, Craig, the first 6 of these guys beat him in his rookie year, when Ted hit .327):

DiMaggio (twice)
Foxx
Johnson
Trosky
Keller
Rolfe
Appling
Vernon
Kell (twice)
Fain
Minoso
Mantle
