He sort of did get his 2000 GG by default. Although that year he led NL shortstops in range, which b-r is able to calculate with IP. Some of the reason he got that award was that Rey Ordonez was injured that year. And once perennial winner Larkin was struggling with his range. Renteria and Cabrera weren't quite good enough yet.
Even without the competition, Perez is in fact a very good glove man and has great range to boot, he just doesn't have the reputation because statheads like most of the people at NetShrine point to his abysmal offensive production.
When you have Bonds, why should everyone be a good hitter? Bonds produces for 3 people by himself and they can afford to have a defensive guy like Neifi.

As much as I'm beginning to understand this deal, and in fact I'm rooting for him to do well because I don't give a damn about his offensive stats...and I care more about denigrating Jack Wilson's offensive value...they easily could've found a better safety valve for Kent than that.

$4.2 m is huge. What the Giants are probably trying to do is see what shakes out. To be stuck with that salary is hard to stomach though. Maybe they'll have Nen pitch bp to him to get him up to speed.
