You may be right about 3B, Fuzzy, but the commitment to Lockhart was indefensible ... and I never mentioned 1B ... the Franco Bros. were fine as stopgaps.

McGriff can still hit, but he will need help with the lefties.

Sox need 1b and a platton for 3b. I am surprised to see Shea name come up in trade deals. Maybe a place for old Fred with the Sox. Lux Tax is a problem. Ticket prices did not go up except for a small fraction of the park (upper end seating......and they were hit hard!!)

What would Fred go for on the open market?

As a pure budgetary move I can see Fred in Beantown, but doesn't Daubach give them essentially the same production for a lot less money? Project Daubach's playing time out to equal McGriff and you essentially have the same player, with the exception that Daubach also provides a decent option as a corner outfielder. I don't see where Crime Dog in Beantwon makes a lot of sense.

As much as I have always loved Dauber we can't afford him and be in the Floyd game. Daub's is salary arbitation time. You saw what happened to Nixon. The Sox are at the ceiling. Henery made the commitment to the season ticket holders. Bills have already been mailed out. The tax won't be paid.

Perhaps we need to institute a "CoxWatch" next year to see if such managerial decision making on the part of a manager who has made 1st time regulars out of more players than any other active manager is an abberation or a trend.

wouldn't that be veteranosis on the part of Schuerholz, not Cox, though?

Perhaps this study could result in the determination of whether Veteranosis is spread by casual contact, airborne or bloodborne pathogens, or if it is merely a behavior disorder which one acquires by imitating the behavior of those in authority who are afflicted.

so is netshrine's pathogen airborne, bloodborne, or just virtual?

back to griff and to respond to jr's point. McGriff definitely would be an improvement over Daubach, except against LHP, where neither is worth much. Boston would improve if they signed McGriff to play 1B and made Daubach into a backup OF/1B a la, I dunno, Dave Martinez or someone:

Griff 523 AB, 30 HR, 103 RBI, 63 BB, 273 AVG, 353/505/858
Dau 444 AB, 20 HR, 78 RBI, 51 BB, 266 AVG, 348/464/812

vs LHP
Griff 141 AB, 213 AVG, 294/326/620
Dau 62 AB, 242 AVG, 314/419/733

vs RHP
Griff 382 AB, 296 AVG, 375/571/946
Dau 382 AB, 270 AVG, 353/471/824

Fielding
Griff: 1B 137 games (136 starts), 7 errors
Dau: 1B 60 games (54 starts), 5 errors; OF 48 games (39 starts), 0 errors
