So who get the job next? My guess is not Steinbrenner, Rose, or Boras.

I thought Bud had appointed himslef commisioner for life. There's one guy I'm glad to see go. Maybe baseball will get a real commissoner now. Nah, that might be too much to ask.

My long-time first choice, Frank Robinson, will probably want to retire by 2006 so...umm...

Frankly, I'd have anyone over Selig. Except a guy who I hope loses his bid for re-election in 2004, no further comment.

I hope someone good comes about in 3 years because a good one right now isn't coming to me.

Leaving value judgments out as well, if that particular gentleman does lose his reelection bid in 2004, then he might be a likely candidate for commissioner in 2006. He might even want the job.

I don't know much about potential candidates - hasn't there been some talk about Bob Costas? I too think Frank Robinson would be a good choice. I hope in my heart of hearts that it's someone with some independence from the owners. That means, not someone with a beneficial interest in one of the clubs ....

FYI - I modified the thread title as I expect the conversation will go as much toward the next commish as it goes toward bashing the current one (which we've done to death anyway).

I won't be surprised if this happens, and expect that it will be what Selig prefers ... but I wonder what the likelihood is of looking outside in three years. Whether Costas, Will, Bush, Lasorda (OMG), etc. ... it's interesting to play 'what if'.

Rickey says, "Rickey would be a great commissioner. Rickey would fix all those problems with baseball. Most importantly, why won't any teams sign Rickey? Rickey's only 47 (circa 2006). Rickey will make it priority number one to get Rickey on a roster for the rest of Rickey's life."

I'd take Costas, but the owners would never put in an outsider. They want a commish that is a mouthpiece for them.
