It would depend on one thing: straightaway or around a curved track or basepath.
Straightaway, I'd probably take Coleman by a step, around the curve, I'd take Willie. |

Coleman - sheer straightaway speed

Vince Coleman in a straight 30 yd dash, or in a home to first contest. That does not mean he's the best player in that group. Ricky wins that contest

Home to first? Coleman. That is, as long as he doesn't get devoured by some mechanical contraption along the way...

A lot of factors have to come into play. If it's a track surface, I may give Coleman the edge, but if you do a dirt infield or natural grass, it's Rickey...he's the only guy of the 4 that ran on it during the 1980's and because it's not as fast as turf it gives Rickey an edge.
Generalizing everything, I voted Rickey, but you need the photo finish camera because it's close. |

Funny - nine votes in and no one picked Raines yet - and, I think he has the highest SB% of the 4..............

Here's the race I'd like to see:
Lane 1 - Ernie Lombardi Lane 2 - Willie Aikens Lane 3 - Gus Triandos Lane 4 - A snail carrying a piano. It'd be close, but I'd have to go with the snail, since it's the only one likely to make the distance (eventually). Merry Christmas all! Last edited by Ytown Tribe fan : 12-24-2002 at 06:37 PM. |

Raines was the best stealer, not necessarily the fastest.
Shouldn't Al Ferrara and Russ Nixon make it through in the other race? |

I dunno -- Lombardi would "win" by a mile.
How about Herb Washington? I bet he'd beat anyone in a 30 yard dash. |

I think Sid Bream belongs in the race with Lombardi & company - he was the only player in baseball who could have made the famous Braves-Pirates playoff game finish into a close play at the plate. Anyone else would have scored easily

Again, it depends on the surface. If it's a track surface, Herb's got a very realistic shot.
Otis Nixon oughta be considered if you want an Olympic sized field...last I heard he was fairly mercurian. |

I think Coleman had the best straight out speed of that group. He was just fast. But I don't think I would ever bet against Bo Jackson in any race.
