Red face Fay Won't Go Away.........

Think Fay has an issue here? He made his point. Bud asked him to stop pushing the same point. Yet, Fay keeps beating it. Why?

Vincent comes out against Rose's reinstatement
ESPN.com news services

Despite being asked by Major League Baseball not to comment on the possibility of Pete Rose being reinstated to baseball, former commissioner Fay Vincent wrote that Rose shouldn't be allowed to return in an editorial piece in The New York Times on Monday.

Vincent wrote that the evidence collected by the commissioner's office 13 years ago seemed overwhelming that Rose had bet on his own team repeatedly. Bart Giamatti was the commissioner at the time and Vincent was his assistant.

Vincent wrote, "I was Bart's deputy in 1989, and from my seat I see no reason why Mr. Rose should be allowed back in the game. On talk radio people say, 'Thirteen years is punishment enough.' No, it's not. Nothing has changed in 13 years."

Vincent went on to say that Bud Selig, the current commissioner, should not allowed Rose back into the game.

Vincent wrote, "The vital issue is what is best for baseball. The commissioner must act in the best interests of the game. Gambling on baseball by baseball personnel undermines the sport. The deterrent, the risk of lifetime banishment, works. Everyone in baseball knows with certainty that betting on a game in which you have an interest will lead to a lifetime ban. To dilute that deeply felt fear the present commissioner must conclude that all previous commissioners were wrong. After all, none of us was willing to reinstate Shoeless Joe Jackson."

Vincent acknowledged the public opinion polls, which seem to favor Rose's return, but disagreed.

He wrote, "I accept the ancient dictum to temper justice with mercy. But to readmit Mr. Rose now, with only a press-release apology, would exhibit too much mercy to a single man and not enough respect for the game he played and the fans who pay to watch it. It is Mr. Rose who has yet to accept the justice of his situation. He had 4,256 hits - and one colossal whiff."

I don't know, Max. Possibly could have something to do with Steinbrenner and Reinsdorf knifing him in the back and elevating Bud tp the commissionership.

I think there are some bad feelings here on Fay's part. But he probably has a good reason to feel bad.

How does that tie into Rose?

Default How about the Obvious?

Wouldnt the simple answer be that Fay knows Rose was gambling on baseball and he should never be allowed to hold an MLB job again?

I know it burns my ass to see that Bud is bowing to public opinion just to make himself look better. But J. Random Citizen doesnt get articles written up in the paper when he spouts his opinion. Former Commisioners do.

Fairly obvious. Who do you think put George and Jerry up to the hatchet job? Or at least in Fay's mind he (Bud) did. The Rose thing gives Fay a chance to embarrass Ol' Bud anew. Not a bad idea when you have a book recently released about your commissionership.

Fay Vincent is concerned about his place in baseball history. He was an accidental commissioner who was ousted in a coup d'etat of the owners. Although Rose's agreement with MLB (the one where MLB issues NO OFFICIAL FINDING THAT ROSE HAD BET ON BASEBALL (emphasis added) was negotiated with Vincent's predecessor, Bart Giamatti, and Giamatti was the one who suspended Rose, Giamatti died with less than a year as Commissioner, whereas Vincent held the job for almost 4 years. Additionally, Vincent was Giamatti's deputy.

The suspension of Rose was the Giamatti-Vincent era's crowning achievement; they upheld the integrity of the game. Let's look at what they didn't do:

Bart and Fay DIDN'T

(A) Do anything to avert a labor strike down the road.

(B) Do anything to relieve the tension between big-market and small-market teams.

(C) Do anything to check the rapidly spiraling salaries in MLB.

If Bud undoes Rose's suspension, Vincent is an historical nothing; he's little more than Spike Eckert in the history books. What will be his legacy then?

These articles have little to do with the well-being of baseball. They have much to do with a mediocre commissioner who wants to be remembered in a more positive light than he deserves.

Let's not confuse what they put down in writing and what they suppose is true.
You may want to check here
for the various reasonings.

I cant speak for Fay's reasoning. But no matter what his intentions, his goal remains the right one. And that is keeping Rose far away from any MLB job.

I wont argue with this, but Fay's bugged me with his 'Look at me' 'I coulda saved the game' schtick for the past couple years. Go away already.

It's only schtick if it's untrue. I think Fay could have been a more positive factor than Bud Light as commissioner

How could any wrong that he did compare with that?" - John Sears

Angry Im breaking my self-imposed embago

...on this one time
To gewt back into baseball, George agreed to back the cretins Reindorf and selig. Selig wants to gain popularity by letting a man who agreed to a lifetime ban, a man who bet on baseball games[the betting slips are in his handwroting and only his fingerprints are all over them} Monte Irvin, who has a bad word for NO ONE, says when he was working for MLB and PR was managing the reds, he got complaints from other managers that himself was calling them up looking for information, and they, the other MGRS called MLB. The HOF members were shown the betting slips and phone records so that they would understand the punishment BEFORE BG went public. How anyone can defend this guy still is staggering to me.PT Barnum was so right...and now I never ever comment on this again, even if PR is elected comissionar of MLB and president of the HOF and selig is elected president of the republic. It is a waste of time, energy and brain cells[mine]

Fay had his chance to save the game, and blew it. If he couldn't play politics well enough to keep his job, oh well! That's part of the turf, when you're the commish!
