Where Does Crime Stop In 2003?

Does Fred McGriff have a job in 2003?

Maybe the Tribe would take him for a year if they lose Thome?
Would Boston take him?
Baltimore?
Oakland?
Back to Atlanta for a year?
The Pirates?

Not really a lot of options and leverage for Fred. He may have to take a NRI or a make-good contract.

Doubtful that he would walk away 22 HRs short of 500.

Atlanta or Baltimore. The Braves could use a good 1st baseman, and McGriff could still hit well. The Orioles may go after him if they miss out on Frank Thomas (I don't want either)

will be interesting to see where McGriff goes and how much he'll get.

honestly, i have no idea what free-agent contracts will be like this offseason.

there are any number of teams that could use a solid first baseman and I bet he be the consolation prize for someone who misses out on the Thome derby (except Cleveland).

He'd be a lot cheaper than Thome and would still improve teams like Philly, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, et al.

I think guys who can hit 25-30 homers a year with a .275 BA 80-100 RBI's and walks can find homes. sobody will need a first baseman and he will find some ok locked in money. somebody will give him a copule of mil. the big question is how long can he keep doing this? he just seems to roll along , never making the cover of the glossy mags but doing that same thing year in and year out. five years ago people were saying that he had maybe two years left but here he is.

McGriff can still hit, and give you decent offense from the middle of the order, even though he can't really play defense any more. There are about a dozen teams that could use him, on a one- or two-year basis.

Atlanta might be a good fit at the right price. i wouldn't overpay for McGriff but he can still hit.

Oakland could use him to DH NEXT year. I bet he'd only take a one year deal. Could Tampa still want him?

He'll be 39 next season and only needs 22 HR's to get to 500 so he'll probably be amenable to a one year contract.

I see McGriff and Atlanta as good for each other. Crime Dog will play for a contender, possibly get back to the Series, in the town where he had, IMO, his most memorable years. He'll be relatively inexpensive, and he can still hit. He's a big improvement over what they have now, and there are no 1B prospects he'll be keeping on the bench or in the minors. (If there were a Hee Seop Choi in Atlanta, Bobby Cox would have had him in the lineup since June, 2002!)

I also think that McGriff will genuinely help the Braves, and will get his 500 jacks.

He's a HOFer! Deservedly so!

Well, considering that Cox insisted on playing Lockhart and Castilla over Giles and DeRosa, I wonder about Cox's willingness to go with a youngster when a "proven veteran" is available. If the Braves sign McGriff, they better keep Julio around to face the lefties.

Cox hasn't been reluctant to play young players. Furcal, Andruw Jones, etc.

Cox didn't really have a young option at 1B. I suspect he put Castilla at 3B because the young players he had weren't really third basemen. (The Braves have a lot of talent stacked up in the middle infield, but none of them really hit like a 3B except maybe Giles, and I'm not sure he has the arm for 3B.

On the other hand, years of falling short in the postseason may have given Cox a case of Veteran-osis. Maybe it's just a 2002 thing; I hope it's not a trend for Cox, or for his teams.

Signing McGriff would not be an example of Veteran-osis, however. He can still play, and the Braves have no kids to fill the 1B hole.
