Cool Rockies Suggestion To Expos

This is good. But, it's a real slap to Montreal, no?

Monday, September 17
Rockies propose shifting series from Montreal
Associated Press

DENVER -- Citing an "opportunity for some significant fund-raising," the Colorado Rockies have proposed moving their four-game series in Montreal this week to Colorado, with proceeds going to the victims of last week's terrorist attacks.

Rockies owner Jerry McMorris proposed the idea to baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

McMorris said the Expos would be reimbursed for their expenses, and the rest of the revenues generated by the four additional games at Coors Field would be given to charities involved in the relief effort.

After a three-game homestand here against Arizona beginning Monday night, the Rockies were scheduled to play in Montreal on Thursday through Sunday.

In the week before the attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., the Expos drew three crowds of fewer than 3,900. Montreal continues to be a top candidate to be eliminated if baseball goes through with a contraction plan.

"We would draw between 30,000 and 40,000 here, compared to 3,000 there," McMorris said Monday. "It's an opportunity for some significant fund-raising, whereas in Montreal the crowds have been predictably very small."

McMorris said Selig was considering the idea, but he had no idea how the commissioner would rule.

"He said he wanted to think about it," McMorris said. "He wants to do some checking."

McMorris said he hasn't spoken to the Expos, whose main objection might be the fact that the Colorado series is in the middle of their 10-game homestand. Montreal begins a three-game home series against Florida on Monday night. After the Colorado series, Montreal would play three games next week at home against the New York Mets.

McMorris said the proposed switch also makes sense from the standpoint of concerns about the security of American players traveling to Canada.

The Rockies will be taking collections from fans at all games at Coors Field, McMorris said, and various matching-fund programs are being considered, including possible donations from Rockies players.

It is entirely inappropriate for the Rockies to suggest this. Pure publicity stunt. The Ugly American yet again. Why didn't they suggest donating the revenue from the current series with the D-Backs. That is a bigger draw than the Expos. I hope Bud says no, but he's boxed in.

Expos already said no.

Expos Reject Plan to Move Games
.c The Associated Press

MONTREAL (AP) - The Montreal Expos rejected a proposal from the Colorado Rockies on Monday to move a four-game series from Olympic Stadium to Denver to help raise funds for victims of last week's terrorist attacks.

Rockies owner Jerry McMorris, citing an ``opportunity for some significant fund-raising,'' proposed the idea to baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

But a team spokesman said the Expos rejected the plan and instead would contribute money for the victims, although not necessarily from ticket revenue.

Tickets have already been sold for the series, which runs Thursday to Saturday and falls in the middle of a 10-game homestand for the Expos.

McMorris said that under his proposal, the Expos would be reimbursed for their expenses and the rest of the revenues generated by the four additional games at Coors Field would be given to charities involved in the relief effort.

In the week before the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the Expos drew three crowds of fewer than 3,900.

``We would draw between 30,000 and 40,000 here, compared to 3,000 there,'' McMorris said. ``It's an opportunity for some significant fund-raising, whereas in Montreal the crowds have been predictably very small.''

Other reports said the Rockies were also concerned about security in Montreal.

Expos vice president David Samson released a statement saying security has been tightened at Olympic Stadium.

``We can assure players from all visiting teams, including the Rockies, that we've implemented security measures as required by Major League Baseball and we have even exceeded them,'' Samson said. ``Our main concern is the safety of all fans and players.''

I can understand the Expos rejecting their idea but they should have at least had someone sing the Star Spangled Banner who actually knew the words. The woman who sang it (I believe she was French Canadian) messed up the words: "Oh say does that Star Sprangled Banner yet gave..." At least it sounded like she said "gave." In any case, she did say "Sprangled." Sheesh.

I caught that too. It was very upsetting that they could have let someone out there who could not pronounce the words correctly.

Happens all the time. It is a hard song to sing. Still considering the exposure last night, I would have practiced it until I had it dead solid perfect.

Hard to sing and singing the right words are two entirely different issues. It was not one mistake this woman made, either.

In the end, jokes on them, team is moving to Washington next year.

Reportedly, John Delcos (a writer) saw a draft of the 2002 NL schedule and it had Washington instead of Montreal on it.

Do you mean Washington State or Washington, DC? If it's DC, Peter Angelos will throw a hissy-fit (hehehe).

DC.

Baseball will give Pete about fifty mill or so to ease his pain.

OK Duque, now you've done it. I have to expose something sick about myself. The more I hear about the hijackers being "everyday" people (working, being in bowling leagues, etc.), for years, up until they get "the call" (at which time they drop everything, and become these monster terrorists), the more I think of that scene from Naked Gun where all of a sudden Reggie becomes robot-like and keeps repeating "Must, kill, the Queen."

I know it's wrong to think of something funny in connection with the attacks, but I can't help myself. I must be sick?

OK, are you scared that we're thinking about the same movie - albeit for slightly different reasons.

Since when does Reggie qualify as an "everyday" person?

And yes, that is most disturbing.

Some would probably say the quotes should go around person and not everyday.
