Red face Bud's Effective Gag Order

No announcements during the post season that will deflect attention away from the World Series.................

Mets Hire Art Howe (accoring to the headline in the NY Daily News), D'Rays Hire Piniella, A's Hire Macha.............etc.

Oh, wait, it's OK. These are not "official" announcements............just leaked stories................

Yo, Bud, same end effect - - whether the bullet was fired by a finger on the trigger or if the gun fired when it was dropped to the ground. The gun owner has to be held responsible.

Think the Mets, D'Rays and/or A's will be fined?

While it wasn't an "announcement" let's not forget Seligs full page ad in Minnesota.

What a putz.

Of course not. Selig will wink and look the other way. Now if Steinbrenner right now fired Torre and hired someone else he'd get a whopping fine.

I hear that the Chicago Tribune is "reporting" that the Cubs (aren't they one in the same) will offer Dusty Baker, "whatever it takes to land him

Looks like Selig may be fining the Mets 50k. He's thinking about fining other teams that spoke out as well, but he's most mad at the Mets. Umm ya know Bud you may want to have one set of guidelines for all to follow. My guess is something like all teams that don't follow the guidelines get fined not just the one that you feel like fining would work.

There's no direct quote from Bud, but nothing really shocks me when he's
involved. The guy is a joke and a bad one at that.

Today's NY Post states that they won't be fined. Again no direct quotes, but it states that Wilpon and Bud spoke and the Mets state they had nothing to do with the leak. I suppose the Easter Bunny is responsible.

I am happy however that Bud isn't making an example of just one team here. All the teams should have been fined for breaking the guidelines, but why bother doing what's right?? This is Bud we are talking about.

While Bud may often times have the best of intentions

um... I can't even finish that sentence...

Anyway, it would seem to me that there are just enough parties involved (manager, agent, team officials) that it might be hard to pin down exactly who leaked what to the media.

Probably the only way to guarantee complete silence of "chatter" during the World Series would be to fine all parties. The risk, of course, is that you would risk hurting innocent parties, but, really, how else can you get everyone to toe the line?

I think Bud's intentions were okay but like Max said it takes a pretty significant baseball story to take away from the WS. Likewise a gag order is silly. Stuff leaks. A simple memo to the teams stating a preference to hold announcements until the WS is over would have been fine. Leave it up to the teams involved.

But notice we jumping on Ol' Bud when nothing was at stake in these announcements. Had this been last year and the Mets announced a new manager during the WS Big George would have been livid that the Mets were trying to upstage him.
