Most significant event

ESPN and this forum have asked what the most memorable event in baseball history has been, probably many times. I searched this site (unsuccessfully) for a poll or thread on a similar question:

What do you folks consider to be the most SIGNIFICANT event in baseball history?

There are lots to choose from, from Cartwright and/or Doubleday, to the organization of the NA or NL, to Harry Wright, to Landis, to Jackie -- a whole slew of others.

For me, it was Ruth going to the Yanks. While I have no doubt he would have flourished as a hitter AND pitcher for the Red Sox, it seems to me that Ruth blossoming as a the greatest hitter ever for baseball's greatest franchise ever led the way to baseball prosperity and dominance as the major sport through most of the last century.

Of course, years from now, Selig's stewardship might be looked at as the most significant; but for now, I'm going with Ruth and the Yanks.

The re-launch of the American League as a major league, with the relocation of teams, in 1901. This created a stable competition to the NL, and allowed, in time, to create a league rivalry that fueled early baseball fans and made the game more of a national game than it was.

Here's a currently active thread in the same vein YTown. That one has some debate over whether its about a Game (as original stated in the opening post) or and event (since that seems to be logic in some of the discussion).
