Default Power hitters in the Postseason

Here's an interesting list, courtesy of Mike's Baseball Rants at http://mikesbballrants.blogspot.com/
It's a list of the postseason performance of all players with at least 400 career homers.

Mike's point is, Bonds' performance in the postseason to date is not much worse than the typical 400-home run hitter.

Well if Mike thinks a .708 OPS is just "a little worse" than an .861 OPS for the group he needs to study up some more.

Barry is still a love him or hate him kind of guy. Much like Williams, the media (and there are a lot of them who fall in the "hate him" camp) can make a story out of a line of stats.

Yes, some guys rise to the occassion in the post-season (and isn't it funny that "Mr. October" is 14th on this list from the top), and some struggle.

It's the same reason why Bucky Dent and Brian Doyle shouldn't make plans for induction at Cooperstown, but can still enjoy their rings.

I think that for purposes of this table we should leave off players that did not get at least 50 plate appearences

Billy Williams only got into a few games at the tail end of career.

Ted Williams got into only one post season and had suffered a wrist injury just prior to the series so that he was way below par physically

Remember Bob "Hurricane" Hazel if you need a reminder of how statistically significant (or insignificant) data based on small sample sizes can be. Gene Tenace for the HOF anyone ?

actually, they should be left on, so that we have more observations in calculating the aggregate. leaving everyone in gives us over 3000 ABs, a sizeable amount by which one can say that Barry has been over 150 points of OPS below the group.

Barry is about on a level with Mays, McGwire and Schmidt. Anybody give them any hassle about their postseason failings lately?

Mays, Mac and Schmidt all grabbed the brass ring. If Bonds hits .250 for this post-season but wins the whole shooting match, this will go away.

Looks like this Mike guy has done the first half of a study to test what VNV et al were talking about last week, ie, whether power/walks guys do worse than doubles/triples guys in the postseason.

At a glance, the .861 OPS figure for 400 HR guys seems to disconfirm VNV's idea. .861 looks about the same as those guys' regular season performance.

VNV -

Whatever point you were attempted to make in the other thread was obfuscated by your cryptic pronouncements....and with this data I don't think you've really made any point whatsoever that could be discerned by mortal human beings.

(i.e. I'm damn confused on what you're trying to say at all.)

This is off topic to Barry compared to the others, but I had to comment that I'm surprised to see Ripken above average in OPS for this group. I don't recall his post season performances that well.

I think the main problem Barry has in perception of his post season performance was that his team never one a series until now. He could whiff every at bat the rest of the postseason and still have this stigma removed from him if the Giants will it all.
