Question Cards' 3B

http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2002/...7/1442431.html
Rolen hasn't been ruled out yet, but the Cards will probably have to play the NLCS without him.

Who do you start in his place and why?

Do you really want to see Pujols try to play third base ???? I suppose with a little practice he might be better than Butch Hobson there, but not by much......

Go with Cario if, A.) he continues to be 'hot' at the plate because of his defensive superiority, and B.) the matchup with the pitcher favors him.

If, in Game 5, the Cards are losing games because of a lack of offense, then move Pujols to 3B and stick Marrero in LF.

However, because the GREATEST MANAGERIAL MIND OF THE LATE 20TH CENTURY is pulling the levers, Marrero might end playing 3B, Cario LF, and Pujols twiddling his thumbs. You never know with that guy.

The obvious answer is you add some infielder to the roster and rotate him, Pujols and Cairo there until Rolen comes back.

I'd throw Marrero in left most of the time. If Pujols is that bad defensively, then Cairo, but Pujols is acceptable at third.

Or Marrero in CF, Pujols in left, Vina at 3B, Renteria at 2B and Edmonds at SS. And the bat boy starting game 3.

Pujols!

The 1968 Tigers beat the Cards with MICKEY STANLEY AT SHORTSTOP! This is where I'm coming from on this!

Looks like they didn't think they's have Rolen before Game 5, but now may have him in game 3.

http://www.espn.go.com/main.html

leave Cairo the hot-hand in there for now...Marrero has been clutch at several positions all year -- he'll make his mark somewhere in this series...

I'd keep Pujols in LF. Maybe Cairo is this year's Mickey Hatcher.

yesterday, HWCBN did something which stupefied me - he started BOTH Cairo and Marrero and left Drew on the bench.

If anything, he should use Cairo vs LHP and Marrero vs RHP and start Drew always.

Cairo is hot right now? Fine, keep him in there, but don't platoon Marrero and Drew, and especially don't do it when the platoon advantage is against you. Marrero may be a righty, but he hits lefties WORSE than he hits righties (and he hits both worse than Drew).
