Although it is still highly unlikely that Seattle will make the playoffs, last night's games got me thinking. Has a team down at least 5 games with as many left to play in the season ever come back to make the playoffs? The odds of it happening are staggering, but surely in over a hundred years of baseball it has to have happened at least once. Right?

I don't think so, really. I know the Phillies Phamous collapse of 1964 was close to this, but I can't think of a team cutting it this close.

What about the Giants in 1951? I don't remember how far back they were, but they went on a great run to force a playoff against Brooklyn.

by the way, welcome to netshrine, rk_michael! Head on over to the Icebreakers forum and tell us a little bit about yourself....
and if you run into Skip, don't let him get you down about 'unsurmountable deficits' - he's a bit of a spelling freak ![]()

4 down with 7 to go isn't the same as 5 down with 5 to go, though.
Everyone would be telling their grandchildren about it. |

Angels game close.
In 1995, Seattle led the Angels by 3 with 5 games to go. The Angels won all 5 games to force a one-game playoff - - - which they lost.

Seattle could do it this year to Anaheim...down 4 with 4 to go (and to think they were down 8 with 8 to go). It could very well happen - IF seattle beats oakland and anaheim loses to texas today, they close off with a 3 game series...

The Giants actually caught and passed the Dodgers, who came back to tie and force the playoff. |

three great comebacks, though not of the five games behind, five to play type:
la sweeping houston in the final weekend, and losing the play-off game in 1980; detroit catching toronto in 1987; and of course, boston's comeback in 1978. |
