After K'ing twice on September 18th, Jose Hernandez has been sitting on the bench for the past two games - just 1 K away of tying Bobby Bonds's record.
The Brewers are currently playing the Giants. If you are the Dodgers, are you not just a little teed off that your rival for the Wildcard is facing a team that is deliberately fielding an inferior lineup? (as opposed to the inferior lineup the Brewers usually field)

Yeah, I'd be ticked, but there's always next year. For the Dodgers and Jose.

this is just silly, and annoying. just like losing 20 games, you have to be a heck of a player to hold the strikeout record.

The guy whiffs in over a third of his ABs.
Just think, if in half of those 188 Ks, if he tried to bunt for a basehit, and, in one-third of those 90-something tries, he got a hit, his batting average would be close to .340. Good player - bad approach to the game. Weak to sit it out, IMHO.

realistically it doesn't work that way though. if he bunted 90 times a year he's also cutting into his hits, walks and homers, not just his Ks.

Not if he did what I said - - - tried bunting in half of those PAs in which he actually whiffed...........not bunt in those PAs where he did somethig positive.........

Why hold someone out now? What's the point. He strikes out a lot, but if he's one of their better players let him play. Who cares if he gets the record. (Bonds probably wants him to take it)

And how do you pick the right ones in advance, pray tell? Besides the ones where Unit is pitching, that is. |

Right, they're only strikeouts after the fact.

Royster's stated reason for sitting Hernandez was that he wanted to save him the humiliation of breaking the K record in front of the home fans -- pretty flimsy excuse for interfering in a playoff race, which, as Duque pointed out, was the result of Royster's misguided compassion.

Sitting is not cool. Halting a double to make a single so you get the cycle is not cool.
I like it when the records just happen.

I hope he gets it for two reasons:
1) he would be immortalized as a fitting symbol of the type of hitter's era we're currently in; and 2) he's not half the player that Bobby Bonds was. Hernandez DESERVES the K record more. |

I've always wondered if Bobby Bonds hall of fame chances were hurt by this record. Having someone else take it may help him with the new Veterans Committee.

No one DESERVES a negative record. Did you DESERVE any bad grade you received in school? He's not an awful player, and while it would demonstrate the era we are currently in, it would be probably be looked upon like the triples record, a quaint byproduct of another era. That is, until the ghost of Gary Alexander past gets 650 plate appearances... |
