Question worst 2nd place team?

My brother-in-law is a mets fan. I'm a pale hose fan. we are in competition to see if one of those teams can be the "worst" ever 2nd place team. The winner of the bet gets a bottle of single malt Scotch. Does anyone know which 2nd place team had the worst winning percentage? Another question, which last place team had the best winning percentage?

In 1909, the Cubs were 104-49 and finished 6 1/2 behind the Pirates.

In 1973, the Cards finished second to the Mets at 81-81.

Of course, in 1994, Texas was leading the AL West at 52-62 when the thing went down the whizzer. In second was Oakland at 51-63.

They may not be the right answer, but there's a frame....

Are these percentages you are looking for for the league or the division.

well, both would be interesting actually. normally I would have the time to check every single year. but i'm trying to catch up on some work. I just thought someone may have known or know of an easy way to find out.

I should have posted this in trivia and pretended I actually knew the answer. somebody would have responded in 30 seconds.

The 1987 KC Royals finished 2nd to the Twins at 83-79. There's a contender.

The 73 Cards probably take it, though.

well, my first guess was the 1983 royals. 79-83, 20 games behind the white sox.

alright, we'll go on that assumption. now what about the best last-place team? 1991 Angels were 81-81 i think.

Interesting note. 1987 cubs were one of the better last place teams 76-85. imagine what they would have been without dawson.
