There's some strike news all over the place today and it's horrible. Last night's flash (which is archived here at the Group site) simply sickens me. I know myself enough to know that any pronouncement I make about quitting baseball is ignorant. I will come back. Baseball is something akin to religion to me, tied to me in some unknown way. I explain my world in terms of baseball and each memory in my life is related in some way to a memory of baseball. My stories are baseball related many times and I learned about love, hope, and disappointment by watching the Cubs as a youth. Anyway, a strike is coming unless something near-miraculous happens and I'm guessing it will happen about August 1. I want to write about how wrong I was to guess that soon. Lee's left it up to me to write this stuff and I wish I knew someone to pass it off to.
On a much better note, Lee Sinins' Sabermetric Baseball Encyclopedia was touted by Bill James as a product he uses and enjoys. Go get your copy at www.baseball-encyclopedia.com. On another nice note, Kevin Goldstein has put together a great prospect report available at http://www.nextstopsix.com/prospectreport/. Awesome stuff from the founder of the best sim league ever. I recommend it highly if you want to beat everyone to the best prospects. Ok, enough other crap, let's do some injuries ... A reader request came in on JEFF BAGWELL. There's been no news out on him so I went straight to the source. He's still weakened from the shoulder surgery he underwent in the off-season, but it's not affecting his batting. Last night, Bagwell made a throw that looked almost comical, coming up about twenty feet short of its goal. The shoulder is making slow progress, but the Astros are perfectly willing to accept the defensive shortcomings as long as his bat remains solid. I'm waiting to see if ESPN gives me the Padres game tonight ... they'd better, because I really want to see DENNIS TANKERSLEY pitch. SEAN BURROUGHS is expected to start tonight after missing some games with shoulder problems, but I can't get a confirmation that he will. Nope, no Burroughs tonight and ESPN screwed me. I get to watch Fat Mo and the Mets again. At least Ishii is pitching. The Rangers may get PALMIERO, FRANKIE CAT, and JUAN GONZALEZ back as early as Friday. The Rangers will be back at full strength by next week at the latest, but still lack pitching. SCOTT ERICKSON and SIDNEY PONSON remain rumored targets. The Rangers are also playing without BILL HASELMAN tonight. They have about one available pinch hitter, I think. Haselman was plunked in his throwing arm, but should be ready by ... oh look, another Friday return. BEN SHEETS will start tomorrow, but our Brewers source says that the Brewers will not hestitate to pull him early or even make him a late scratch. MAGGLIO ORDONEZ left last night's game with back pain. He's playing tonight, but it appears to be a problem that may recur or be chronic. Keep an eye on his production over the next few weeks. RAY DURHAM is seeking the opinion of a hand specialist to determine the cause of his pain. TONY GRAFFANINO will fill in. Durham has been not only durable, but darn good for the Southsiders, so this could really derail their team. That and the horrid starting pitching. DAVID SEGUI has left the Orioles to seek a second opinion from a hand and wrist specialist. As we detailed last week, Segui is very bitter about how the organization has dealt with this injury. If the O's are looking to bring in free agents to revitalize that team, this isn't going to be a big selling point. (See: Davis, Eric vs. Reds) TROT NIXON has the poetic "flu-like symptoms" and will serve his suspension for chucking a bat at RYAN RUPE. This is wrong on so many levels that I'm not going to talk about it. I don't normally do many minor league injuries, but J.R. HOUSE had serious abdominal surgery today that may end his catching career. I'm not a scout so I don't know where House may end up or if he'll discuss a football career again soon. KEVIN MILLAR had a great quote about his injured oblique - "I'm not coming back until it doesn't hurt to sneeze." Sneezing can be very dangerous. I'm totally serious. Really. I'll tell the story sometime. The Fish can afford to wait on Millar because he's been pretty bad this year and CLIFF FLOYD came back early. Watch DARRELL MAY's start on Saturday. He was a really good pitcher in Japan and I think he could be a better bet than ISHII by the end of the season when you factor in how bad the Royals are. Ishii's raw stats will probably be better, but May is good. Rehab lightning round, catcher style - TODD HUNDLEY to extended spring training and two weeks away minimum. KELLY STINNETT is close to a return and forces the Reds to figure out their catching situation. SHAWN WOOTEN is about two weeks away from reporting to Lake Elsinore (A). TRAVIS FRYMAN had a cortisone shot in his repaired shoulder. The injury is being incorrectly reported as an arm injury. The shot was to relieve bicipital tendonitis - the biceps connects at both the shoulder and elbow (to oversimplify) and flexes the arm. However, the injury to Fryman is in his shoulder and affects both his swing and throwing motion. RUSSELL BRANYAN figures to play more third for a while. Next report tomorrow ... if you want to see something cool, go to the Group web site (groups.yahoo.com/group/UnderTheKnife) and check out the new . We're working feverishly ... ok, I never work feverishly, but a web site is in the works. It will NOT be Undertheknife.com ... I'll fill you in as soon as it's safe.

Moose is on the verge of owing me two beers!
![]() I forgot this earlier tho Moose ... your gf's name doesn't happen to be Emily does it? I passed this guy who was obviously meeting his gf's parents just in front of the park, near Honus. I was tempted to stop and ask if it was you, but I figured the odds that is was were so bad ...

Sure hope you are right about this. He was unimpressive in spring training. The Royals pitching actually seems to be improving.

Got to see Tankersley pitch myself last night - and was very good. Not only did he not give up a hit til the 5th inning or so, he also got the first hit off Vasquez.

Duque - could you give us more details? What was he throwing? How did his motion look? Did he seem poised? Etc etc

Sure - his control was shoddy at times (evidenced by the 4 BB), but he seemed well able to pitch out of jams (there was at least two DPs turned behind him). His fastball got up to around 96, but was consistently in the 92-93 range. Seemed to do best when he pitched down (just doublechecking the box score - he had 11-1 groundball to flyball out ratio), and his best pitch was a hard slider that broke quite a bit. Rich Eisen and Chili Davis were calling it a frisbee.
I'm trying to think of what other pitcher his motion resembled - he seemed to have a fairly easy delivery. Actually, it was not unlike Javier Vasquez - who he was pitching against.

I seem to recall someone else in the game saying that May was a sleeper this year. Think it was another player?
