1) The Giants re-signed Barry Bonds to a 5 year, $90 million contract. The first 4 seasons are guaranteed, but the Giants have the option to void the final year if he doesn't have 500+ PA, unless he has both less than 1500 PA from 2003-05 and less than 400 in 2005.

Bonds had one of the greatest seasons ever, if not the greatest, in 2001, hitting .863 SLG, .515 OBA, 1.379 OPS, 173 RCAA, .924 OWP, 18.98 RC/G, 232 RC in 153 games. It was the 7th time he had 75+ RCAA/150+ RC in season. Bonds has a 1.003 career OPS, compared to his league average of .746 and LF average of .780, 1088 RCAA and 995 RCAP.

2) The Rangers traded 1B Carlos Pena and P Mike Venafro to the A's for P Mario Ramos, 1B Jason Hart, OF Ryan Ludwick and C Gerald Laird.

Pena's going to be 1 of 4 players to receive an A grade in the 2002 Minor League Scouting Notebook and is ranked as the Rangers's #3 prospect by John Benson. He had a .958 OPS (.550 SLG, .408 OBA) in AAA and hit .500 SLG, .361 OBA, .861 OPS, 3 RCAA, .635 OWP, 6.89 RC/G, 12 RC in 22 games in the majors in 2001.

Venafro had a 4.80 ERA and -2 RSAA in 70 games in 2001. He has a 3.95 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.76, and 19 RSAA in 212 games, while his ERA has gone up and RSAA has gone down each year of his career.

Ludwick was ranked as the A's #1 prospect by Benson. In 2001, he had a .859 OPS (.503 SLG, .356 OBA) in 119 games in AA and a .579 OPS (.333 SLG, .246 OBA) in 17 games in AAA.

Ramos was ranked as the A's #2 prospect by Benson and will receive a B+ grade in the Minor League Scouting Notebook. He had a 3.14 ERA in AAA in 2001 and a 2.88 ERA in 2 minor league seasons. According to the Fort Wayne Star-Telegram, "With Rick Helling expected to sign elsewhere, Hart said three-fifths of the starting rotation will be Chan Ho Park, Doug Davis and Kenny Rogers. That leaves spot Nos. 4 and 5 to Dave Burba, Rob Bell, Aaron Myette, Hideki Irabu, Bill Pulsipher, recently signed free-agent Steve Woodard and Ramos."

Hart was ranked as the A's #7 prospect by John Benson. he had a .744 OPS (.419 SLG, .325 OBA) in AAA in 2001.

3) The Cubs signed free agent OF Darren Lewis to a 1 year, $500,000 contract.

Lewis had another bad year to add to his collection, hitting .366 SLG, .326 OBA, .692 OPS, -6 RCAA, .381 OWP, 3.95 RC/G, 19 RC in 161 PA in 2001. The only thing that prevented him from his 6th consecutive double digit negative RCAA and the 8th time in 9 years was the low amount of PAs. Lewis has a .645 career OPS, compared to his league average of .764 and positional average of .756, -152 RCAA and -190 RCAP in 1295 games.

4) The Twins signed INF Kurt Abbott to a minor league contract and re-signed 2B Jay Canizaro, INF Todd Sears, and Ps Grant Balfour, Mike Duvall, Tony Fiore and Brad Thomas.

Abbott played in 6 games with the Braves in 2001 before suffering a season ending injury. He has a .728 career OPS, compared to his league average of .771 and positional average of .717, -67 RCAA and -28 RCAP in 702 games.

Canizaro hit .396 SLG, .318 OBA, .714 OPS, -17 RCAA, .351 OWP, 4.31 RC/G, 42 RC in 102 games in 2001. It was the 2nd time in his 3 years in the majors that he's had a double digit negative RCAA. Canizaro has a .693 career OPS, compared to his league average of .785 and 2B average of .712, -24 RCAA and -10 RCAP in 157 games.

Balfour pitched in 2 games with the Twins in 2001.

Duvall has a 4.76 ERA and -1 RSAA in 53 career games, most of them (40) coming with the 1999 Devil Rays and 8 of them with the Twins last year.

Fiore has a 7.30 ERA and -7 RSAA in 18 games with the Devil Rays and Twins in his 2 year career.

Thomas had a 9.37 ERA and -9 RSAA in 5 starts with the Twins in 2001.

5) The Phillies re-signed CF Doug Glanville, who would have done to salary arbitration, to a 1 year, $4 million contract and signed P Pete Schourek and INF-OF Roberto Zambrano to minor league contracts.

Glanville had his usual awful season in 2001, hitting .375 SLG, .285 OBA, .660 OPS, -26 RCAA, .358 OWP, 3.80 RC/G, 70 RC in 153 games. It was the 4th time in his 5 years as a starter that he had a double digit negative RCAA, with his fluke good 1999 season being the only exception. He just missed leading the league in outmaking for the 3rd time in his career and had his 2nd consecutive year ranking 4th in worst OPS. Schourek had a 4.45 ERA and 0 RSAA in 33 games with the Redsox in 2001. He has a 4.59 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.19, and -54 RSAA in 288 games.

6) The Yankees signed INF Manny Alexander to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Alexander has a .613 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777 and positional average of .715, -73 RCAA and -42 RCAP in 541 games.

9) According to NY Newsday, "The Mets are in serious discussions" on a 3 way deal could send Jeromy Burnitz, Jeff D'Amico and Lou Collier to the Mets, Glendon Rusch, Alex Ochoa and a player to be named later (from the Rockies) to the Brewers and Todd Zeile to the Rockies

10) BlueJays P Mike Sirotka, who missed the entire 2001 season after surgery to repair a torn labrum, threw 40 pitches from 40 feet and MGR Buck Martinez says he's optimistic that Sirotka can return "sometime during the season."

A few years ago he played for the Bosoxs. The bat boy or ball boy was arrested in Manny's car (while Manny was on the road.)Steriods were found in the glove compartment box. Manny had no idea how they got there. My major question at the time was why would anyone let a shaddy bat boy/ball boy drive a brand new Mercedes?

People were wondering if Manny took steriods. I never once thought he did because he stunk!

Word to wise......keep him away from the bat boy at Yankee Stadium.

Why would anyone want to sign Darren Lewis? He can't hit and he doesn't walk. I have heard forever how great he is on defense, but last year, I checked box scores to find him playing RIGHT field, not center. What a waste. There are guys in the minor leagues, some of whom have been waiting for years to get a shot, who would work for minimum wage, with the same skills and talent level as Darren Lewis. Why does he get another shot, even as a bench player?

Because GMs like proven veterans. In 12 seasons, Lewis has posted a FP of .994 (against LgFP of .983) and RF of 2.23 (against LgRF of 1.98). However, as you point out, his defensive value (if any) now only comes in playing the corners. Over the past two seasons, his RF has been better than the league average only in left field.
