Default Vic Power Dies

Vic Power, one of the first Hispanics in MLB, has died of cancer at age 78. He is one of three players who has special meaning for me. The first MLB game I ever attended was at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City in the mid to latter 1950's. I was 9-10-11, somewhere in there. Anyway Power, Hector Lopez, and Harry "Suitcase" Simpson were warming up in foul territory somewhat past 3rd base. Imagine my surprise at finding out you could actually walk up to the railing and ask major leaguers for their autograph and get it!

Wonderful column by Steve Goldman of the "Pinstriped Bible" on Vic Power and his time in the Yankee system. For you youngers members don't judge Weiss or the Yankees too harshly here, their attitudes were those of the times and they did keep the better player.

I don't, though some of my older extended family members think otherwise.

I'm glad I got to "know" Mr. Pellot (He was called Vic Power as a result of a misunderstanding) a little better through the Viva Baseball documentary a couple of months ago.
