Since 1999, Foulke has been the best RP in the majors, by far. How did the Chisox and Oakland let him go? Was it all just over $?

It was a money thing in Oakland. But in Chicago, I believe they wanted more of a classic strikeout guy to close, so they moved him to a setup role, then essentially traded him straight up for Billy Koch. Yikes.

How a GM makes a move like that, and keeps his job, is amazing.
IIRC, was it just the Sox and Oakland that were bidding on him last year? Were all the other teams with money asleep at the switch?

I am not sure how the bidding went. It was all kind of quiet. The A's didn't really do much to retain Foulke. They knew he was out of their price range. They were thrilled to have unloaded Koch for one year of Foulke.

Yeah, if there were other serious bidders they kept it pretty quiet. The Sox went after him hard from the beginning but I don't recall anyone else doing so.
