Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking. Just have fun.
- Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, in The Sandlot

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

I don't think even the vainest of today's GM's would select a Jaime Bluma over Curt Schilling, but your point has more than a modicum of merit. I don't see how any GM can be effective unless he believes in what he is doing and is willing to do it even if others scoff at it. Now you can call this ego or hubris or conceit, but a GM has to believe in himself.

Unfortunately, too many GM's have the ego but lack the skill to develop and stay with a plan. A big ego and a bad plan equal (insert name of the team you think is in the biggest disarray).

Was it Ali (or Clay) who said, "It ain't bragging if you back it up."?

Anyway... whoever said it...

The Young Turks who have taken over some of the prime spots in ML front offices are going to live and die by their beliefs and their talents. Just like every old school GM. Some guys will get the breaks, some guys won't. Some will live up to their press clippings. Others will fall short. Just like the old school GMs.

I wouldn't say risk-taking in the fashion you describe it is a trait of just the young GMs...I'd say its a trait of many old-school GMs as well. Can't add much to what boomer and timmyb (sounds like an ESPN pre-game show) said...
