Angels sign Sele to three-year, $24 million contract

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Aaron Sele, one of baseball's winningest pitchers over the past four years and an All-Star with the Seattle Mariners last season, signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Anaheim Angels on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old right-hander has won 69 games since 1998, the most by an AL pitcher during that time. Only Randy Johnson (76), Greg Maddux (73) and Tom Glavine (71) -- all NL pitchers -- have more victories over that span.

Sele will receive $7.5 million next season, $8 million in 2003 and $8.5 million in 2004.

"We're happy to add a pitcher of Aaron Sele's stature to our staff," Angels general manager Bill Stoneman said. "Our pitching staff was strong over the course of the 2001 season and, with the addition of Sele, should be even stronger in 2002.

"Not only does Aaron pitch a lot of innings over the course of the season, but he also is a proven winner."

Sele won his first eight decisions last season, a Seattle club record. He finished 15-5 with a 3.60 ERA and two complete games, one a shutout. He pitched 215 innings and allowed 216 hits and 51 walks while striking out 114.

A two-time All-Star, Sele has a 107-68 record and 4.33 ERA in 242 appearances in the majors -- all but one a start. He has 13 complete games and seven shutouts in his career.

Drafted by Boston in 1991, Sele pitched for the Red Sox and Texas Rangers before joining Seattle for the 2000 season, when he went 17-10 with a 4.51 ERA.

A native of Golden Valley, Minn., Sele was an All-America selection at Washington State.

The Mariners lost Sele the same day they signed free-agent outfielder Ruben Sierra to a one-year, $1.9 million contract.

I would never have guessed Sele to have the most wins in the A.L. since 98. That one would have frozen me like a Bert Blyleven curve. He also has an 82-47 record since 97 - not to shabby at all. But will he have this kind of success working for Anaheim, I doubt it. Being on good, talented teams also helps, & there is not much talent in Anaheim.

That surprised me too!!! If the Mo deal goes through, Appier & Sele 1 & 2 is not too bad a way to start a rotation.

I'll admit I wouldn't have minded him in pinstripes, only because I'm greedy. Hope I don't get too much flack f/being honest.

Sele, a Yankee? Have you seen his post season record? Besides, as it is, NY (AL) has 6 candidates for 5 slots.

His 2001 PS 0-3 record isn't so hot but I think it's better to have someone who can get us there stronger than to worry about how well they may just do then. It wasn't until this year that Randy Johnson started winning anything, but who wouldn't have traded f/him? Same w/Maddux.

If he signed for $8M, that's just above Hitchcock's $6M. Sele would seem more likely to win that Orlando Hernandez so a 3-year deal wouldn't be such a bad option. All the Yanks need now is someone like David Cone to get 8-10 wins and half as many losses. Sele was 15-5. I wouldn't mind having him in pinstripes.

Schoenweis will be decent. I like Ben Weber a lot, but I don't know if he can start.

Disney has the makings of a good team if they don't screw it up and import some broken down has beens.

For Mo's career, I hope he does bounce back. That would make three I can think of offhand who need to bounce back from questionable pasts re injury: Mo, Boomer, Rondell White.

BTW, what does his being an east coast player (Boston) have to do w/this? He's now signed with a west coast team (Angels). Does either coast matter in this?

Anyone see the stories that via restructured contracts the Mets may land both Mo and JuanGone? They could be the Rangers of 2002.

He's from the East. He may be more comfortable there. He went to Seton Hall, so the NY/NJ area may be to his liking more than El-Lay.

Sele cannot beat anyone good in a big spot.
