I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

It is nice to see the Brewers enjoying a decent season so far. They are in a pretty tough division so I really doubt they can finish above .500, but their pipeline seems to have some really fine players on the way. The problem will be can they put enough pitching together to be successful before those future studs go free agent. Milwaukee simply cannot generate enough revenue to keep a top flight ball club together for any length of time. They will have to be savvy and lucky to have extended success.

The Braves look like they are headed for a decline to me. All their prime players are gone or are declining. I don't see a lot coming out of their farm system at this time to offset these losses. The Braves do have some reasonable financial resources to bring to bear to assist them in their re-tooling. I am not sure of their ownership's resolve to field a winner or their understanding of how it is done. Their management (Schuerholz and Cox) are also getting long in the tooth and you wonder if they have it in them to go through a rebuilding.

Lots of teams believe that you develop position players and then trade for/buy pitchers - - because developing pitchers is such a suckers bet. Basically, it's what the Yankees have done since 1994. They developed Pettitte and Rivera - - but, went out and got Nelson, Stanton, Clemens, Cone, Wells, Key, Duque, Mussina, etc.

That will be the trick for the Brewers, while Fielder, Weeks, and company are young and cheap, spend whatever money you have on getting some pitchers.

The article didnt really do anything for me - one of those "shrug the shoulders and say so what" kind of things. I think it needed some controversy or jumping to unwarranted conclusions to spice it up

OK, the Red Sox streak ends after this year. That good enough for you?

I would be interested in finding out how such trends have changed historically. Not that I want to do the leg-work, mind you. Are the average and longest winning and losing streaks longer or shorter than in other eras? Anyone?
